    1. [MILLS] George Mills not from Yorkshire
    2. Helen S. Ullmann
    3. I really don't think George Mills of Jamaica had any connection with Yorkshire. This is based on his residence in Hempstead, Long Island where Rev. Richard Denton arrived in 1644. Denton was from Yorkshire, but there is no reason to assume George came with him. Nicholas Tanner was from Dorsetshire. Since George evidently had a connection with him, it's much more likely he came from the West Country, about as far from Yorkshire as you can get and still be in England. So I'm also sceptical about that possible Lavenham, Suffolk, connection. Where's the evidence???? Helen Ullmann > >

    2. Are you sure you have the right children listed with the right family members. Henry Samuel MILLS born 1821. to Reuben and Ruth KELLY??? She would have been 57 years old when she had him ?? Kind of old, maybe to be having a child. So many years after all the others??? Way too late for a "change of life baby"? Onset of menopause in those days might have been a lot sooner, rather than later. They lived with so very short candles, and the life was so desperately hard for them. Maybe Henry Samuel MILLS was son of Samuel MILLS and Sallie SMITH?? Just asking. Or am I mis reading your downline??? for this family. Pat cw In a message dated 9/14/2008 2:01:56 P.M. 2. I know it is a stretch, but notice that one of John's descendants married a POTTER. Could this family in some way be related to the Albin Daniel MILLS - Dotha FORD, son of Daniel MILLS - Mary POTTER DUNBAR family?? They removed from New England area to Iowa, etc. Notice that Samuel also removed from New England to Missouri, not all that far from Iowa, by river boat. Just asking, about all I can do these days. 1. [MILLS] MILLS of New England Reuben - Ben F, etc.
    2. Interesting. Thank you for posting your information. I had happened across this couple listed on _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) . Back in November last year. I did not see them on rootsweb at the time. But did see another couple, William MILLS and Elizabeth BURNS, had six children MILLS. NO names, No places. Apparently, I did not check further, and now see that most of that person's database seems to be all of England? and Ireland. Must not have had on my glasses that evening. Thank you for sharing your tree with all. Pat cw DNA testing has been done on a couple MILLS males, present day, and seem to have ties to this area of the country. Not sure, if your John or Reuben might be listed on the _www.familytreedna.com_ (http://www.familytreedna.com) under MILLS DNA Project web site?? _http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~crrking/mills/mills_dnar.htm_ (http://freepages.family.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~crrking/mills/mills_dnar.htm) go to DNA results page. Lists those ancestor names, dates, DNA markers/loci/numbers breakdown. Click on ancestor name and take to pedigree as submitted with DNA sample by male MILLS descendant/researcher. Is yours among them?? Again, just asking. In a message dated 9/14/2008 2:01:56 P.M. 1. [MILLS] george mills
    2. Jackie Lock
    3. Hi there, I am still looking for my elusive Mills family. So far, I have now found out the following: George Mills was born in Reading, Berkshire in about 1849 to parents George and Ann being an only child. I have found a birth on freebmd for Reading in Mar Q1850 for a "Male Mills" which could possibly be his birth. I also found a christening on LDS on 29 February 1856 at St Mary, Reading, Berkshire to parents George and Ann. In 1871 census, it is shown that George was a carman and was a lodger in the household of Mr William Colan at 34 Flower & Dean Streets, Christchurch, Spitalsfields (Whitechapel District). He married on 2 June 1872 in the parish church in St Nicholas parish, Deptford, Kent to Margaret Baker. She was born in about 1850 in Sunderland, Durham. Margaret was the daughter of John Baker and Agnes Mitchell. The Baker's were in the ship business. . In the 1881 census, George is listed as being a ship fender maker and also as being blind. (He could possibly have been working for his wife's family as they were in the shipping business. His neighbours on either side, were Mrs Ann Pratt a charwoman and Mr Robert Winder a basket maker. George and Margaret had 4 children, Elizabeth in 1873, Walter in 1878, Margaret Ann in 1881 and Eliza in 1889. Eliza was born after the death of George who died in 1888 in Greenwich. On his son's marriage certificate, he was listed as deceased and having been a farrier, and on his own marriage certificate to Margaret Baker he was listed as a labourer (1872). George's father was listed as Cook and Margaret's father was listed as Shipwright. They were both full age and from the parish of St Nicholas . Their witnesses were Robert Baker (Margaret's brother) and Stephen Fi(e)tch. George and Margaret's son, Walter, was born in 1878 in Deptford, Greenwich, Kent. In 1881, he is shown to be living with his parents, and siblings at 17 York Street, Greenwich Kent in the census. Together with the family, were two lodgers, a widow John Galler, aged 32, and his son, aged 9 years. John Galler was a basket maker. In 1891, the family were living at 56 Road Street, Greenwich, and the eldest daughter Elizabeth was shown to be a photographers assistant. By this stage, their father George had died in 1888 at the age of 41 years, leaving his wife to look after their children, with Eliza being 2 years old. Their daughter Margaret was not listed among the rest of the family, as she was at the S M D School for girls in Surrey. In 1901 she was a domestic cook in Greenwich working for the Steel family. Margaret was listed as widowed and a "Laundress Wash". She died in 1904 in Greenwich at the age of 53 years. In 1901, Walter is shown as living in Lamb Lane with his mother and sister Eliza. He was a Stoker at Oil Cloths Works. Between 1901 and 1906, Walter, being a purser on board ship, met Mary Jane Caroline O'Leary. She was a governess to a wealthy family teaching and looking after their children. (In 1901 she was a boarder, when next we find mention of her, she is getting married in 1906.) On 9 May 1906, while living at 25 Leppoc Road, Clapham, Walter George marries Mary Jane Caroline at the St Michaels at Bowes church in Middlesex. He was listed as a Purser on his marriage certificate. Walter was 27 years and Mary was 30 years. Mary was born on 13 March 1876 in Cork, Ireland to parents Stephen Joseph O'Leary and Jane Caroline Nash. Mary's father died between 1878 and 1881. Her mother was listed as a confectioner in the 1881 census, and her sister Amelia Anne was living with them at 11 Winster Terrace, Camberwell, Surrey. Mary moved and became a boarder in the household of John H Culpin at 77 Grosvenor Road, Walthamstow, Essex as shown on the 1901 census. At the time of Mary's marriage in 1906 she was living in Lancaster Road, Bowes Park, Middlesex. Shortly after their marriage, within months, they emigrated to South Africa, landing in Durban (Port Natal). They settled in Port Shepstone where their first child was born, a son. If anyone is following the above family, or could possibly help me confirm the names of George (B1849) parents. Perhaps someone could do a lookup for George and Ann Mills in 1841, 1851 or 1861 census to confirm them as parents of George Mills born 1849/50. I would appreciate any bit of information no matter how small to assist. Many thanks Kind regards Jackie

    2. Thompson MILLS. Page 139 Family Tree Maker, Family Archives of Ohio 1790 to 1950 CD Set #450 Disk 2. Says Co H 180th Regiment OVI Mustered into service Oct 1 1864 for one year. Franklin and Pickaway Counties. I have seen another Thompson MILLS name, but it is as Mark Thompson MILLS, son of Col James MILLS and Sarah REED of Darke Co. OH, who came from Sussex Co. NJ as very early settlers to the area. He paid a man to take his horses to the Northwest Territory for him. The man disappeared as did his horses. James was paid several bounties on wolves that were plaguing the settlers. etc. other notes re this family also on this same CD set. Histories of various counties and biographical sketches. They were around Losantiville now Cincinnati for a time, then removed north up to Darke Co. where they lived on and are buried in that county. See cemetery information on the USGEN site for Darke County. Samuel MILLS and Priscilla MORFORD family part and parcel are also on rootsweb on several databases dated variously from 2004 to 2006. Not sure about the Michael MILLS. Could he be the one whose daughter married an OGDEN. They removed from New Jersey as well. He is listed on page 340 on the book about John OGDEN, the Immigrant, as listed on ancestry.com web site. Michael's daughter and family then removed to Indiana. Marion County Ohio (probably an Older > Brother) Joseph is the son of Thompson Mills? Am Looking to corispond with > someone who is familier with Joseph and Thompson Mills. I have the James H. Mills descendants. Dear Fritz: I have nothing on your James and Mary Mills, but I have some knowledge of Knox and Coshocton Co (OH) Mills that may be relevant. John and Rachel (Leonard) Mills came from Morgan Twp Greene Co PA to Knox Co in the early 1800s. Eventually (at least by 1814), they settled in Bladensburg, which is in the southeast portion of Knox Co. Among their children was Thompson Mills, probably b in the 1780s. A Knox Co court record includes Thompson Mills (and his brother Michael) as a witness in 1808, so we know he was still there. I have no further knowledge of Thompson and his children (if any), but neither have I tried to find it. I imagine you could track him. Bladensburg (Knox Co) is just about 15 miles from New Guilford, in Perry Twp, Coshocton Co (OH). A notice in the Coshocton Democrat, 19 Sep 1876, says: "Joseph Mills, one of the pioneer settlers of this county, died on the 4th inst, in the 87th year of his life. He was born July 4, 1790, and came to Coshocton Co and settled in Perry Twp in 1823, where he continued to reside for fifty three years." Land records show that Joseph actually bought Perry Twp land as early as 1820, and that he was "the original proprietor," meaning that he cleared and improved it for farming. In the 1824 tax roll, James Mills appears in Berlin Twp, Coshocton Co, but I suspect he is not part of this family. There is some reason to believe that this Joseph is Joseph Mills Jr, son of Joseph b 1754 who moved from Frederick Co MD to Bedford Co PA. Joseph Jr. was a gunsmith. Given the tendency of families to rely on relatives for help when moving, and the closeness of New Guilford and Bladensburg, I suspect there was kinship between John of Bladensburg and Joseph of New Guilford, but I have no evidence for it. But it would suggest that if Thompson Mills had a son Joseph, he might have been named for his (cousin? brother? nephew?) Joseph of Perry Twp, Coshocton Co. The Mills Family Genealogy volumes of Edward C. Mills (available from the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, and on microfilm for InterLibrary Loan) list some of Joseph and Mary (Exline) Mills' twelve children (Vol II, pp 50-54). One is Joseph W., b 1830 at New Guilford and d in Minerva IA in 1888. However, Joseph W. was still living in Perry Twp Coshocton in 1850, so I doubt that he can be yours. Finally, an article found by Shirley Evans refers to Samuel Mills, son of the Joseph who came to Coshocton in 1820. Samuel was born 1818 in PA and had nine children, including a Joseph and an S. A. Mills (probably Samuel). This youngest Samuel spent some years in Buckeye City (a few miles west, in Knox Co) but returned in 1882 to farm his grandfather's (Joseph Jr's) land. This also suggests a possible link to Knox County Mills, among whom the younger Samuel might have lived as a youth. Really finally, I am eager to locate descendants of John, Thompson, Michael, Joseph or James who are living Mills males and will do the DNA test with Family Tree DNA, where we have a terrific Mills project going. It is urgent that Mills men with solid paper trails back to the Ohio families of the early 19th century get into this DNA project. It's our best hope for resolving the confusion of Mills genetic lines. Land records show that > Joseph actually bought Perry Twp land as early as 1820, and that he was > "the original proprietor," meaning that he cleared and improved it for > farming. In the 1824 tax roll, James Mills appears in Berlin Twp, > Coshocton Co, but I suspect he is not part of this family. > > There is some reason to believe that this Joseph is Joseph Mills Jr, son > of Joseph b 1754 who moved from Frederick Co MD to Bedford Co PA. Joseph > Jr. was a gunsmith. > > Given the tendency of families to rely on relatives for help when > moving, and the closeness of New Guilford and Bladensburg, I suspect > there was kinship between John of Bladensburg and Joseph of New > Guilford, but I have no evidence for it. But it would suggest that if > Thompson Mills had a son Joseph, he might have been named for his > (cousin? brother? nephew?) Joseph of Perry Twp, Coshocton Co. > > The Mills Family Genealogy volumes of Edward C. Mills (available from > the Ohio Historical Society in Columbus, and on microfilm for > InterLibrary Loan) list some of Joseph and Mary (Exline) Mills' twelve > children (Vol II, pp 50-54). One is Joseph W., b 1830 at New Guilford > and d in Minerva IA in 1888. However, Joseph W. was still living in > Perry Twp Coshocton in 1850, so I doubt that he can be yours. > > Finally, an article found by Shirley Evans refers to Samuel Mills, son > of the Joseph who came to Coshocton in 1820. Samuel was born 1818 in PA > and had nine children, including a Joseph and an S. A. Mills (probably > Samuel). This youngest Samuel spent some years in Buckeye City (a few > miles west, in Knox Co) but returned in 1882 to farm his grandfather's > (Joseph Jr's) land. This also suggests a possible link to Knox County > Mills, among whom the younger Samuel might have lived as a youth. > > Really finally, I am eager to locate descendants of John, Thompson, > Michael, Joseph or James who are living Mills males and will do the DNA > test with Family Tree DNA, where we have a terrific Mills project going. > It is urgent that Mills men with solid paper trails back to the Ohio > families of the early 19th century get into this DNA project. It's our > best hope for resolving the confusion of Mills genetic lines. > > Ted Mills > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] > with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of > the message
