Sounds like at least the HALL child is explained. Maybe he was attending school at the little school house that may have been on their property, or is a grand child or ? niece nephew maybe. Thank you too, I missed the John MILLS entry. More than likely, all of them are related. they did tend to congregate together. once moved into an area. The Robert MILLS, I could not find any else on. Sorry, did not check familysearch.org though. Will do that today, this p.m. am in the middle of something right this sec. pat cw In a message dated 9/30/2008 8:01:34 A.M. Thanks for the heads up. No, I hadn't found my Andrew Bottorff in 1840, so I hadn't seen this. I'm looking at the census now. That appears to be ?aret Mills, but I read it as "free white person". Author: MollyMaxine Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.mills/5637.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Your posting is the first encouraging thing I've seen regarding "my Mills family". My Andrew J. BOTTORFF b. 1812, and his wife Elizabeth Ann (MILLS)Bottorff, b. 1815 Shelby Co, KY, are living in Liberty Twp, Tipton Co, IN in 1860 near your Andrew J & Mary/Polly MILLS! There are other Millses there as well, but I don't recognize the other names. They are all likely related--somehow. Interestingly, I noticed that one of your Amos's siblings had the middle name of "Marion". My Andrew & Elizabeth named one of their sons "Milburn Marion". The only thing I know about my Elizabeth Ann Mills Bottorff other than what family records indicate as her birthplace (Shelby Co KY), is that she had a brother Amazon/Amzi Mills b KY as well...he died in Komomo, IN. Andrew & Elizabeth were married in Clark Co, IN in 1837 and worked their way westard. Scott Co IN in 1850, Tipton Co IN in 1860, and finally settled in Washington Co, NE in 1865 where they lived out the rest of their lives. In 1850 ! Andrew & Elizabeth Ann had living with them a Abigail Mills, age 68 b. NY, who I presume to be Elizabeth's widowed mother. Also in the household is a Louisa Hall/Hale/Heale, age 4 b. I've read tons of stuff on Col. Ambrose Mills trying to catch up with all you long time Mills researchers. I can't come up with any "facts" to satisfy me that he was the son of William Mills who died in Amherst County, Virginia. I know that man had a son Ambrose, but what makes that Ambrose, the same as Col. Ambrose Mills? Why couldn't William's son be the Ambrose Mills who shows up in Lunenburg County? Or was Col. Ambrose Mills in Lunenburg County before going to South Carolina? I've seen reports that Ambrose married in Maryland. William Mills was in Albemarle/Amherst County when his son Ambrose was of marrying age. I've seen reports that Col. Ambrose Mills had a sister who married a Watts. What ties Col. Ambrose Mills to the Watts woman, other than speculation? And who said Col. Ambrose Mills was born in England? Proof? There was a William Mills imported to the colonies in 1721. Couldn't he be the William Mills of Amherst County and not the father of Col. Ambrose? I doubt an indentured man would come to the colony with a small child. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

On the next page from Andrew and Elizabeth 1840 census for Indiana, is a Robert MILLS age approximately 50 to 60 and with children, 5 of 20 and under 30. 1 female 60 and under 70. After you exhaust your initial, self, brothers/sisters/father/mother, aunts uncles, grand parents each side, and then great grand parents, if known. There on back need more information, birth records, marriage license/certificates, etc. Land records, wills and estate packages. Church records, if known of which religious persuasion ones family may be/or were. did he come here from another country and enlisted to fight in the Civil War, what Side, Union or Confederacy? That is if you know this information. Have you checked at your local library for Civil War Rosters of Soliders listed in books/microfilms/microfiche, that show the names of those who fought in the war. Usually by state, however, where they enlisted. Census records also can be checked at the library. Otherwise, at your nearest LDS Family History Library Center, can be of assistance further for you. See where he turns up on them. You have his name and a birth date, and place of birth. That should be a good beginning. Your nearest LDS Family History Library will probably have copies of those census records. Since you know he left Scotland/England, you would need a time frame to look on passenger and immigration lists. If he came to America, he most likely came through Ellis Island. Those records are also listed on the internet for searching. Probably on the first census he would appear, would tell when he immigranted some times tells the town exactly.
