Anxious to exchange with anyone working on this family. So far no one has been able to figure out who John MILLER's parents were, or if he was the immigrant. At one time I received an email from someone [about 1997] stating they had proof that old John was the son of a Peter Mueller [how do you do an oomlout] and I have tried and tried to find that person. When I emailed back to them to try to find out how to find the records, ships list or whatever, their email bounced. Have not been able to find that person since. Claire
Hi Claire, I don't have your John Miller et al, but the word is umlaut (the 2 little dots over an a, o, or u). In German, i and e never take umlauts. You can produce these letters, along with the ß character (ss) using your computer keypad and the ALT key. But it is best to use the accepted "ae", "oe" or "ue" form when typing umlauted words, because not all list readers can read the umlauted version of the name/words. Another accepted practice is to say, "MULLER (umlauted U)." Now, here is the keypad + ALT key code: Ä = Alt key + 0196 ä = Alt key + 0228 Ö = Alt key + 0214 ö = Alt key + 0246 Ü = Alt key + 0220 ü = Alt key + 0252 ß = Alt key + 0223 Just hold down the Alt key and depress the number sequence using the keypad on your computer to obtain the desired umlauted or ß character. This is good for typing text in your word processor, but be aware that some people will not received your desired effect - it could come out looking like =C4, =D6, =DC, or =DF instead of Ä, Ö, Ü, or ß and =E4, =F6, and =FC instead of ä, ö, and ü.
