Notes for JESSE MILLER: The following is excerpted from "The Maddox Family of Maryland with Webster and Related Families," pp. 290-294: Family tradition states that Jesse Miller came from Virginia by way of the Carolinas to Georgia and settled in Warren County. He married Martha McNaire near the time of the Revolutionary War. Martha had immigrated from Scotland to Georgia at the age of twelve with her family. Jesse and Martha had three sons born from 1789-1790: Joshua, Ezekial, and Theophilus. Jesse took up arms against the British and served as a sergeant in the Wilkes County Company under Captain Solomon. On the 4th of February, 1784, Colonel Greensbury Lee of the Third Battalion of Richmond County signed an affidavit certifying that ". . . Jesse Miller hath steadfastly done his duty from the time of passing an act at Augusta, 1791, until the total expulsion of the British from this state and is therefore, under the said act, entitled to a bounty of two hundred and fifty acres of good Land, free from taxes for ten years." Jesse requested 287 acres of land in Washington County and the Warren County tax list of 1794 lists him as owner of 125 acres in Washington County as well as two slaves. His first wife apparently having died, Jesse married Martha, known as Patsy, Dennis in Warren County in 1803. In the Warren County tax list of 1805, Jesse is listed as owning 114 acres and five slaves; in the tax list of 1818, 200 acres and seven slaves. Jesse and Patsy had six daughters and four sons: Nancy, Polly, Malinda, Dennis, Catherine, Joseph, Benjamin, Frances, Sarah Jane, and Martha. In 1828, Harris County, Georgia, was created from the southern portion of Troup County and the northern portion of Muscogee County. Jesse received a land lottery grant there and sometimes between 1828 and 1831 moved his family to Harris County. He lived there until he died. Although the exact date of his death is unknown, his will was probated in Harris County on the 24th of November, 1832. Below is the will of Jesse Miller as recorded in "History of Harris County," by Louise Calhoun Barfield, p. 281-282: WILL OF JESSE MILLER -- REVOLUTIONARY WAR SOLDIER (Hamilton, Ga., Book "66," p. 30) Harris County, Hamilton, Georgia Georgia, Harris County, In the name of God, Amen.
