I am new to the list so I am not sure if there is any Search function on the Archives other than to through them month by month and a messages at a time. I'lll try to figure it out, meanwhile, I'll show you my brick wall and perhaps someone will see something familiar, or direct me to some places I could search Daniel Y. Miller was my greatgrandfather, born 1847 in IL.(documented in homestead records). He was elusive throughout his life and disappeared after the 1910 Census so I don't even have his death record for another clue. However, I did find a Daniel Y. Miller age 3 in the 1850 Census Putnam Co. IL with Daniel Miller 35 farmer b. OH, Susannah 42 b. VA, George F. 10 b. IA Territory,James J. 9 b IA Terr. I have NO proof that this is the right family. There is a Daniel Miller in 1840 Census > Iowa Territory > Lee > Township 68 showing 1 male and one female 20-30, no children. Also in 1840 Census > Iowa Territory > Linn > 1 male and one female both 20-30 and one male under 5. Either could match depending on birthdate of George F.) The same family is in the 1860 Census IL Bureau Co., Berlin twp Post Office:Malden with another child Angeline 10 b. IL. Now Daniel (Sr) is 46 born in OH and Susan(sic) 45 in VA. (Interesting that she is now younger, not 7 years older than him.). He is indexed on Ancestry as Daniel Z, but it is clearly a Y. I cant't find them in 1870 when he would 23. Daniel Y. Miller married Amy May Casner in 31 Dec. 1878 in Lincoln, Lincoln Co., KS. In the 1880 Census they are in Elk Horn twp, Lincoln, Kansas. This time he says father and mother both born in Ohio. Their first child Myrtle Irene was born in Atchison KS on Aug 17 that year. Two years later they emigrated to Blackfoot, ID to homestead. Homestead records confirm his birthdate and place (1847, IL) but give no other personal information. Cora born 1884, Walter 1887. In 1900 he sold the ranch and they settled in Pocatello where they are found in the 1900 Census. He probably did not give the info as parents are listed as unknown. By 1907 Daniel Y. Miller is a saloonkeeper in boomtown Ballard, WA (annexed to Seattle that year) while wife and younger daughter are still in Pocatello (confirmed by newspaper report) and in 1910 D. Y. Miller is alone and a teamster at a hotel in Goldendale, Klickitat, WA near where son Walter lived. This time he says parents born in Germany and Virginia. That is the last I can find although I have searched the death records of 5 states, which is not easy with a name like that. If anyone has any ideas about where I could find more info on this OH-VA Miller family, I'd be very grateful. This is a hard brick wall to climb. Ann Lamb
