    1. [MILLER-L] NY Herald Dec 12 1890
    2. FOUND in the NY Herald Dec 12 1890 "WHY THE MILLERS WERE NOT ARRESTED" Marshall Jacobus says he could not act without warrants" Marbury & Fox, Attorneys for the British Counsul General, Still feel sore because Comissioner Shields refused to extradite Mrs. Cornelia V.E. MILLER, and are now blaming Marshal Jacobus for not arresting her husband. William Wadsworth MILLER, and her son Wwillard Yates MILLER, when they arrived in this city on a french steamer on Oct 23, nearly two weeks after Mrs. MILLER'S arrest. Mr. Jacobus in some way learned that the two men were coming on the vessel, and was on hand to meet them when they arrived. They were identified by Deputy Marshal Bernhaird, who has acquired great skill in recognizing people by descriptions of them. F.M. Lincoln and ex- Congressman J.J. Adams, Mrs. Miller's Attorneys, also met the men on their arrival, and this seems to have given rise to the suspicion that Marshal Jacobuss arranged a meeting between mother and father and son, so that Mrs. Miller might turn over to her husband the money in her possession. The woman is alleged to have brought $137,000 or more of the asseets of J.H. Field & Co., the London Bankers, when the firm failed. Her plan was, it is charged, to place the money in the hands of her husband, he being a member of the firm, and thus prevent the creditors getting it. Marshal Jacobus said last night to a Tribune reporter that he did not arrest the MILLERS because he had no warrant for them. "To have done so," he went on, " would have laid me and my bondsmen open to a suit for damages. I learned that the MILLERS were to arrive here, and was on hand to see them, so that I might know them in case they were wanted at any time. I allowed Mrs. MILLER to meet her husband and son at her sisters house because i place dno restrictions on her movements, except to have a deputy by her constantly. At that time it was not known that Mrs. MIller had any very large sums of money. I watched the men when they met Mrs. MILLER and for several days afterward, and when they left the city. so that I could put my h and on them if they were wanted. The warrants for them were not issued until November 8, about 10 days after they left NY. I made no secret of having seen the two men and don't believe that they rec'd any money from MRS. MILLER.

Four other men who were in the machine at the time were also badly injured. The accident occurred at Troy avenue and Pacific street. The machine which was going along Pacific street at a high rate of speed, reached Troy avenue just as a Sumner avenue car, in charge of Motorman Henry P. HAUCK, of 1377 Bergen street, came whirling along Troy avenue on its way to Manhattan. Motorman HAUCK, it is said by eyewitnesses of the smashup, put on his brakes and slowed up. SCHNIBBE, thinking the motorman would bring his car to a standstill, continued on across the street. Instead of stopping, HAUCK again put on his power and crashed into the auto, throwing the occupants in the air. SCHNIBBE landed on his head in the gutter and was instantly killed. Mr. WICHERT and his business partner, Mr. GARDINER, and some friends had been to Coney Island in the machine. Upon leaving the Island SCHNIBBE took the party to their homes, and then started ostensibly for the garage. Instead of going there he went to the Eastern District, where he formerly worked as a bartender, and met several of his friends including Charles TIETJEN, who owns a large cafe at 703 Wythe avenue; Henry MULLER and Samuel OLDHAM, both of 703 Wythe avenue, and Charles HUTCHINGS, of 582 Bedford avenue. One of the members of the party suggested that SCHNIBBE take them for a ride. He agreed and the four got into the auto and started down Bedford avenue. At Pacific street SCHNIBBE turned into that thoroughfare and started for Troy avenue where the smashup occurred. After the smashup HAUCK jumped from his car and ran to assist Policeman GORSLINE of the Atlantic avenue station, who was but a block away when the accident occurred. When it was found that SCHNIBBE had been killed the motorman was placed under arrest on a charge of homicide. SCHNIBBE's friends were also badly injured. HUTCHINGS is lying at his home suffering from internal injuries and bruises about the body. MULLER is suffering from scalp wounds and contusions. TIETJEN received several cuts about the face and body and OLDHAM had his left leg hurt. HAUCK the motorman, was taken before Magistrate HIGGINBOTHAM,in the Gates avenue court, to-day to answer a charge of homicide. He had nothing to say, and was held in $3000 bail for examination on July 16. SCHNIBBE, who had been in WICHERT's employ for over three years, lived with his famiy in Greenville, N.J. 1. [MILLER-L] General Commands
    2. Miller, Penny D.
    3. This message is just a reminder of the commands available to you on Rootsweb. First, you send message to the listname followed by a dash and then an L so it would look something like [email protected] or [email protected] or [email protected] Now, if you want to subscribe to a list on Rootsweb OR unsubscribe to a list on Rootsweb, you would then send the message to listname, followed by a dash, followed by an L, followed by a dash, and the word request. A few examples are [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] The command(s) that you must send to this address are simply subscribe or unsubscribe. You must not include anything else in the message. You may not even have a signature file or that could turn this message into an error. RootsWeb does NOT have a NOMAIL function. If you will be away, you must UNSUBSCRIBE from the list and SUBSCRIBE again when you return. If you don't, 2 things may happen: 1) You will accumulate a ton of mail and 2) your ISP may start bouncing mail. RootsWeb will automatically UNSUBSCRIBE you after 4 bounces. Archives ARE available for the time you are away. If you desire to get digests (groups of messages) instead of individual message, you must subscribe to the digest version of the list. To subscribe or unsubscribe to the digest version of any list you must send a message with the word subscribe to the listname, followed by a dash, followed by a D, followed by a dash, followed by the word request. Examples follow: [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] You can be subscribed to both the digest version and the individual version of a list. I would suggest that when changing from one to the other, that you subscribe to both first. Once you are receiving the message the new way, you can then unsubscribe from the one you no longer want. Digests are available now on all of my lists. On slower lists, digest means no messages for a couple of days. Regardless of whether you are on digest or not, ALL messages are posted to [email protected] I repeat: Regardless of whether you are on digest or not, ALL messages are posted to [email protected] Rootsweb also no longer allows the individual to look at the names of people on the list. This used to be called a REVIEW on the old Maiser lists. If you need to find out if you are on a list or have problems with your subscriptions, you must write to me to investigate the problem. General Information regarding RootsWeb can be found at: http://www.rootsweb.com/ http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/ Please keep this email around for when you need to unsubscribe from any of these lists. The concepts work on all of the lists held here at RootsWeb. If you have any questions or problems, please direct them to me personally at one of the following addresses. 3. Jan, I am still looking for any children of John Jacob Miller (Johan Jakob Mueller) who was a Hessian fighting for the English in the Revolutionary War. The only child I have information on is Jacob (Jake) my great-great-grandfather who was born 1795 in what later became Scott County in Virginia. Jake and old John Jacob left Virginia in the 1830s going through Sullivan County Tennessee (home, I think, of Mary Ann (Polly) Lotts, Jake's wife) and finally settling in Pike County, Indiana. What interested me about your message was the similarity of names. Jake's children included Jacob, Noah, George, James, David, John, Sarah. Do you suppose there could be any family connection? John Jacob an uncle or father of Solomon?
