    1. [MILLER-L] What is the origin of the name INDIA MILLER?
    2. Does anyone know the origin of the name India Miller? Do any of you have an India Miller in your family? There appears to have been an India Miller in South West Louisiana between 1850 and perhaps 1900. It is thought that she is the daughter of a John Miller whose wife was Elizabeth. She may have lived in the Pitkin, La. area. Jno

    1. [MILLER-L] Greene Co. PA and Monongalia Co. WV - Quinter as first name
    2. I had an email from my aunt this morning, asking if I ever heard any stories about my great grandfather's middle name, Quinter. He was James Quinter KEENER. She seems to remember from childhood that he told her a story about this name. What I know from my database is that the given name Quinter appears 4 times, all in one family. The first person I have with the name is the brother of my great great grandmother, James Quinter MILLER. The following is my list: * James Quinter MILLER (1848-1881) son of Asa Miller (my great great great grandfather) * Clarence Quinter MILLER (1872-1924) grandson of Asa Miller and son of William Lewis Miller (who was another son of Asa Miller) * Mary Quinter MILLER (1881-?) granddaughter of Asa Miller and daughter of James Quinter Miller (above) * James Quinter KEENER (1885-1975) son of Amanda Catherine Miller (daughter of Asa Miller) So in my family, I find the first occurrence of the given name Quinter in 1848, when Asa MILLER and Mary JOHN named their son James Quinter Miller. I am looking for occurrences of this given name prior to 1848. Anyone have that given name in the MILLER or JOHN or KEENER families? How about any other Greene County, PA, or Monongalia County, WV, families? Anyone else have given names that are unusual that pop up for a few generations and then are gone? I've had a few occurrences of the middle name McClellan(d) showing up during the Civil War. I appreciate any help anyone can offer with the name Quinter. Kelly McEntee San Rafael, CA

We MUST NOT let the travesty below take place According to an article today at WorldNetDaily.com, with the upcoming 2-year anniversary of the deadly 9/11 attacks, an atheist organization is once again warning against using a steel-beam cross at the site of the World Trade Center disaster from being used in a permanent memorial to the victims who died there The organization American Atheists (founded by the late Madalyn Murray O'Hair) is protesting a proposal to use a large steel cross found in the rubble of the World Trade Center in a memorial to victims ! of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. We all remember that cross. A construction worker came across it in the midst of the WTC wreckage just a few days after the attacks. It was standing straight, 20-feet high, surrounded by many smaller crosses. After it was discovered, construction workers, firefighters, police officers and family members began holding weekly Sunday services at the site. The names of fallen police officers and firefighters were also scribbled on the cross, along with the message "God Bless Our Fallen Brothers". And now, this group of atheists is threatening a lawsuit to prevent the cross from becoming part of any permanent memorial. You and I can help to stop their assault by signing Conservative Alerts.com's online petition. ACTION ITEM: The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, the agency overseeing the rebuilding of the area, has made no decisions on what a Ground Zero memorial would include. (Diary entry for 1 Nov. 1865, diary of Nimrod Porter, unpublished.) Tombstone inscription in Rose Hill Cemetery, Columbia: William J. Briggs - born 27 Oct. 1838, died 3 July 1864, "He was killed by the guerrillas. He fought bled and died for his country. He leaves a wife and one child." Tombstone inscription in Anderson Cemetery, Hickman County; D. C. Miller, born 18 April 1838, died 23 August 1916. Duel at Night - Very few are the Maury countains[sic] 50 years of age that do not remember Dave Miller, Pate Sowell and Newt Vaughn, and others who were hot-blooded southerners, game as men as ever made...They used to ride into Columbia right up to the courthouse and fire several volleys at the Federal soldiers inside, then ride as swift as the swiftest wind out of harm's way for they were always splendidly mounted and pursuit was utterly useless. Dave Miller was perhaps the best known of all the southerners in that day who fought the northern enemy not in the ranks of the Confederate armies, but on the outside; "guerrillas" they were called. At last accounts Dave Miller was still living near Shady Grove in Hickman County. It was Miller, it was said, that killed Jay Briggs, the famous Federal scout and guide, who was perhaps the most noted of all the men in the northern secret service in Middle Tennessee during the Civil War. Briggs was a "Home-make" Yankee and not only by reputation, but by sight and name was well known in this and adjoining counties. One bright moonlit night two horsemen, both superbly mounted, booted spurred and armed to the teeth, met in the pike near Spring Hill. As they approached each other they instinctively drew rein. "What is your name," demanded one of the other. "Jay Briggs" was the intrepid reply. "Dave Miller, you cur" was almost shouted back. Quick as a flash both men drew their guns and fired. Miller galloped away with a hole in his hat. Briggs fell from his horse and died upon the highway. His body was brought to Columbia and buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. The shooting provoked intense excitement and all the countryside was greatly disturbed for several days. Briggs' wife had a very bitter inscription place on the tombstone and erected over her husband's grave and it is there yet for the curious to read. (Daily Herald, Columbia, Tn, 24 Jan. 1903.)
