Special to Tod Davis <[email protected]> I have a GARRETT MILLER, who was born in 1758 at Morristown, N.J. and died at Millerton, Tioga Co., Pa. on 2 May 1824. He married MARY SMITH on 28 May 1778 in New Windsor, N. Y. He seems to fit with what you have except for the fact that I have his parents as GARRETT MILLER and PATIENCE GRISWOLD. This senior GARRETT was born in 1731 in Connecticut and died in 1778 in Orange Co., N. Y. His father was WILLIAM MILLER who died in Morristown, N. J. on 14 Sept 1769. >From GARRETT our line descends as follows: GARRETT MILLER x MARY SMITH JAMES MILLER x REBECCA KINNER LYDIA MILLER x LEONARD MILLER JESSE MILLER x MARY ELLEN SHANNON LOGAN J. MILLER X BERTHA BELLE SCHUBERT MARY ETTA (MARIETTA) MILLER x HERBERT GEORGE VORE The last couple are my parents. Herb Vore Jr.
PORTRAIT AND BIOGRAPHICAL ALBUM pg 577, 578 WILLIAM J. MILLER. Many of the leading men of this county are its native-born citizens as in the case of Mr. MILLER, who was born May 4, 1834,in the northwest part of Beaver Creek Township, Greene County. His parents were James and Sarah (HARNER) MILLER, and his father came to this region during its pioneer days. James MILLER, a native of Greencastle, Pa., was born September 15, 1807, and his wife, Sarah, was born in Beaver Creek Township, this county, December 17, 1802, the same year that Ohio was admitted into the Union as a State. The father of our subject in his journey to this county was accompanied by the well-known John HARBINE, one of its earliest pioneers. Mr.MILLER occupied himself as a carpenter and was married to Miss. HARNER about 1840. He had secured one hundred and thirteen acres of landâthat upon which his son now resides and where he settled with his young wife, they beginning housekeeping together in true pioneer style. James MILLER opened up a good farm from the wilderness where he and his estimable wife spent the remainder of their days. Mr. MILLER died about 1870 at the age of sixty-seven years. Up to the beginning of the Civil War he had affiliated with the Democratic party, but not being able to harmonize with the Democracy on the question of Union and slavery, he wheeled over into the Republican ranks, remaining there until the close of his life. The mother died about 1870. The parental household of our subject consisted of two children only, William J. and Sarah J., the latter being the wife of John DAVIS and living in Beaver Creek Township. James MILLER had three brothers: William,Matthew and Robert. Robert located first in Greene County, Ohio, and from there went to Logansport where he remained until his death. The MILLER family is of German and Scotch ancestry, from which countries respectively the paternal grandparents of William J. emigrated at an early day. Mr. MILLER has spent his entire life upon the farm where he now lives. He attended the district school during his boyhood and youth and obtained a practical knowledge of agriculture, which with his habits of industry have made him a successful and independent farmer. He is largely interested in Poland-China swine and has carried off the blue, and red ribbons at the County Fairs. The head of Mr. MILLERS herd of swine has taken the red ribbon at the Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois State Fairs. He has made of this industry a specialty for the past seven years. His farm buildings are ample and convenient and he avails himself of modern methods and improved machinery in all his operations. Mr. MILLER was first married in 1864 to Miss Anna PRUGH. She was born in Montgomery, Ohio, and was the daughter of Peter and Charlotte (MITCHELL) PRUGH who were among the earliest pioneers of that section. They came hither from Maryland where Mr. PRUGH had learned the trade of a shoemaker and which he followed in connection with farming after coming to this State. His family included three sons and four daughters, of whom Miss Anna was the youngest born. Of her union with our subject there was born one child, a son, John G.,and the mother passed away seventeen months after her marriage; this son is now in Beaver Creek Township. The second marriage of Mr. MILLER occurred in 1868 with Miss.Sarah E., daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (GETTER) STEELE of this county.Six children were born of this union, viz: Jessie F., William L., Clarence Orphus,James L., Sarah Elizabeth, and Annettie G., the latter deceased. Mr. and Mrs. MILLER are both connected with the Reformed Church. The parents of Mrs.MILLER were natives respectively of Greene and Warren Counties, this State, and Mr.STEELE politically was a Republican. Their family consisted of one son and five daughters, Mrs. MILLER being the eldest born. The paternal grandfather was Ebenezer STEELE, further mention of whom is made in the biography of J.D. STEELE on another page in this volume. I'm looking for my grandfather. I have very little info on him. I know that he lived in or around La Follette, TN. He went by the name of LUTHER SHARP. My grandma was very ill when we talked and she couldn't remember very much. He lived with some Sharps and took on thier name(possibly adopted). She thought his birth name might be LUTHER M MILLER. From what she told me, I'm guessing he was born in the 1920's (give or take a few years.) and is believed to have died, possibly in the 1960's. His Mother's name was Margaret. No one could remember her maiden name, but they did tell me that she married Jesse Norman at some point after Luther's birth. Luther also had a twin -a brother, I think. He had a son born in La Follettte in 1948 and a daughter born in Wayne County, Michigan in 1951, both were born out of wedlock with an Ayers. (email me for these names) Obviously, this isn't alot to start tracing your roots on. I'd appeciate ANY info anyone might have to offer. Feel free to email me direct, if you'd like. Looking for researchers of James, James and William Miller who appeared on the 1820 Xenia Twp, 1820 Census for Greene Co., OH. These individuals appear on the same page as my Millers and seem to have no tie to other Millers in the county. Can anyone shed some light on these people? Dave Miller

http://www.randywillis.org Seeking information on my maternal great-grandfather ARTHUR ALLEN HANKS (b. Aug. 27, 1877; died Aug. 22, 1942) Arthur Allen Hanks parents were William Hanks and Francis Soileau. He married MARY STARK (b. Jan. 18, 1860; d. Jan. 08, 1931) on Oct. 17, 1895. He was 17-years younger than her. They owned a meat market in Lecompte, Louisiana. Their log home was located right in the middle of where IH 49 is today (approx. 500' south of Highway 112) near Lecompte. The Children of Arthur Allen Hanks and Mary Stark were: my grandmother, Lillie Gertrude Hanks (b. Dec. 29, 1897; d. July 02, 1973), Ivy "Buddy" Lee Hanks (b. Nov. 18, 1898; d. Dec. 10, 1982), William Hanks, b. Nov. 18, 1898; d. Dec. 16, 1898), Callie Hanks (b. June 18, 1901) and Mary Cordelia "Delia" Hanks (b. Apr. 04, 1902; d. Aug. 20, 1946). My grandmother told me that each day, after school, her mother would say "little lady, get a potato and work n the field." My Uncle Howard Willis, told me that his grandmother Mary Stark, reminded him of Grandma Walton on "The Waltons" TV show. Arthur Allen Hanks later married Gertrude Jenkins (1900-1973) and moved near Cushing/Quay, Oklahoma. Gertrude Jenkins first husband was a Laughful Miller; they had four children. Arthur Allen Hanks died in Cushing, Oklahoma and is buried near Yale, Oklahoma in an unmarked-grave. Gertrude died in Tulsa and is buried near Cheneyville, Louisiana. Arthur Allen Hanks and Gertrude Jenkins also had four children: Wilma Hanks (b. 1928), Mary Hanks (b. 1930), Donna Hanks (b. 1938) and Edwin Hanks (b. 1941). I've been a member of the Miller bulletin > board for quite a while, but have never seen any Millers from that > area. > Thanks. I am almost completely sure that this John A. Miller was one of my GG Grandfathers. I am descended from his daughter Parmelia (also spelled Permelia, Pamelia, Amalia and even Cornelia on some documents.) She was his oldest daughter, born 2 Oct 1870. She appears on the 1880 census of Fremont, not Roscoe, along with her mother, Catherine, and siblings John, Henry, Margaret and Mary. In 1889 or 1890 she married Lewis Norton, son of Edward J. Norton and Mary Elizabeth Secord, who had lived in Fremont but had moved to Cooks Falls and then Burnwood, both in Delaware county. Edward J. also served in F Co. of the 143rd., enlisting on the same day and at the same place as John Miller. Parmelia died from childbirth complications on 7 Apr 1902. She was supposedly buried in Goulds, Delaware, NY but I can't find her stone in either cemetery there. Their children were Clifford, Ruby, Dennis, Bessie, Henry, Mary Katie and Florence Pamelia. Clifford was my Grandfather. The oral tradition in Dennis' family is that when Parmelia died, the children were brought up by various relatives. In his case, one Margaret Miller Hoolihan, who had a brother named Henry. Knowing only this and that Parmelia listed her father as having been born in Germany on the 1900 census (where she's called Cornelia), I did an exhaustive search for Miller families in Delaware and Sullivan counties that matched these parameters. Yours is the only one that did. Unfortunately, that page of the 1880 Fremont census is water damaged and very hard to read at the bottom. Parmelia is called Amelia. The census taker for Fremont made many, many similar mistakes (and had terrible handwiting, as well). I did extensive research on the Hoolihan family and found that Margaret married two of them, first Baron Richard Hoolihan in 1898, with whom she had six children, and later Charles Buckley Hoolihan, Baron's brother, about 1910. They had at least 4 children, 3 of whom died on the same day in May of 1916 and are buried together in Roscoe (I just found this out recently). John Miller's older brother William lived next door to him in Fremont in 1880, with his wife, Arriette, and sons, Henry and Wilmot. The 1860 census shows John, William, and Conrad (not George), living with their parents, Henry and Catherine, in Fremont. They had emigrated from Darmstadt, Germany. Sullivan county has hundreds of families that seem to have come from Darmstadt within a few years of each other. I never looked into the later Roscoe censuses. I didn't know they ever lived in Roscoe. I lost track of everyone except Parmelia and Margaret after 1880. Oddly, part of the family story was that Margaret and Parmelia had a brother NAMED Roscoe. This obviously got warped in the retelling. I have a lot more details, names, dates, etc. We obviously need to exchange everything we have on these branches of our family. Your Cousin, more or less, Bob Norton
Looking for anyone who knows of an Archibald Miller born abt 1800 in South Carolina and died in the 1870's in Gordon County Georgia. His wife's first name was Hannah, born abt 1796 in South Carolina. .
