    3. Just wanted to pass on something I learned yesterday in searching thru census records, or any database I guess. I found that my 4th gr grandfathers first name was abbreviated to Saml. rather than Samuel (or Samuel S. or even S.S.) and each person listed in the household only had the 1st initial of their name written. The whole page was like that, guess the enumerator took shortcuts that day. I know on a late nite or "foggy" day I wouldn't have thought of that. Luckily I had decided to search for the surname for all in the state and this was how I found them. Just thought I'd pass this on.

    2. Margy Bousman
    3. John Addison Miller was born Feb 22, 1822 in Oneida County, New York. I have a copy of his pension papers where this is stated in his handwriting. I have a very old picture it is on cardboard on back it says: James Miller father of John Addison Miller father of Clarence Miller father of Marcus Miller father of then my two living uncles names are written. Then in very light pencil it is written underneath that "I think that is how it goes". James is the only name that could have been in question. I have census reports for him for : All census reports taken in Washinton, D.C. 1870- where he is listed as born in New York. 1880 census lists him as born in New York, father born New York, mother born New York. 1900 has him born in New York, Father born England, Mother born New York. 1910 has him born New York, Father born Scotland, Mother born New York. Death certificate states he was born in New York, Father in Scotland. Mother in New York. He died in 1913. In pension papers he states he enlisted in New York. No area or county given for enlistment. Enlisted April 28, 1855; honorably discharged April 24, 1860 Enlisted April 24, 1860; honorably discharged May 26, 1864 Enlisted May 26, 1864; honorably discharged to date March 29, 1865 Also stated in pension papers that His wife is Eliza Beardlsey. And that he was never married before marrying her. He married Eliza in D.C. in 1860. Shortly after discharge from the army he went to work for the War dept. In papers he filled out were the following questions- Birthplace: New York Legal voting{ State: New York County: Oneida Congressional District: 23rd (According to a librarian in Oneida, the whole Oneida area was the 23rd district at that time) Relatives in Government Service: None I have been unable to find him in the 1850 census in Oneida New York. From his War Deptment paperwork with his voting district listed leads me to believe he stayed in Oneida until enlisting. One interesting Miller family in 1850 Oneida - Wright Miller had a John Nevins living with them and a Mortimer family two doors away. One of John's sons was named Rufus Nevins Miller and a daughter Belle Mortimer Miller. His other children's middle names seem to come from John's wife's family names. All children born in DC.: Clarence Anderson Miller b. 1861 Belle Mortimer Miller b. 1866 Marcus Beardsley Miller b. Abt 1868 Grace Josephine Miller b. 1869 Rufus Nevins Miller b. 1873 He was abt 38 at the time of his marriage. The family stayed in Washington, D.C. I have no clue as to his mother's name at all. Thanks , Margy

    3. Hi Joan, Welcome to the Miller list! Penny, thank you for all the years you have spent as our administrator. Luckily we do behave here most of the time. I think the last time we had a major list uproar was when we found out the board was being gatewayed. We did finally understand that was what was causing all those weird thank you messages that didn't make any sense at all. You acted quickly to calm us down and have always acted in the best interest of the list. Sorry about spelling your last name wrong the other day. I had a feeling I was wrong. Once again, thank you for the time you have given the Miller list through the years. Joan....Can you tell I'm really glad one of the changes was not bringing the gateway back :-). 1. [MLR] Introduction...change of list administrator
    2. Hello everyone- I'd like to introduce myself to the list. Your list admin, Penny Miller Romo, has asked me if I'd be willing to take over as admin for the MILLER list. I have accepted her kind offer. Penny has to give up the list due to health reasons but she remain on the list as a subscriber and will keep posting to the list when she can. I know we all would like to thank Penny for her years of service to this list as administrator and we look forward to Penny continuing on the list as a poster. I'm new to the MILLER list but have been serving as the administrator of the MILLER message board for several years. So I am not new to MILLER research. I have three separate MILLER lines in my own family tree, all in York County, PA--all of German/PA Dutch origin. I also admin or co-admin approximately 40 other RootsWeb mailing lists, many are small less active surname lists, but several are large and active lists. So, I'm not new to adminning a list. Penny has told me that you are a great group of researchers. I don't plan to change anything drastically as to the way the list functions. For the most part you won't even know I'm there UNLESS you need me for something. You can always contact the MILLER admin by writing to: [email protected] . My firm belief is that the list is here to serve YOUR needs--I'm just here to see that the list has a captain to steer the ship when needed. I've made two minor changes for now which you should know about, one you will notice right away and the other will probably not be noticeable to you at all. The one is that I've abbreviated the list name as prepended on each list message which used to be shown as [MILLER-L] so that it now reads: [MLR]. Hopefully, this will still enable you to recognize messages as coming from this list but will allow more space for the actual (hopefully informative) subject line to be displayed. If you are using the prepend to filter your mail--please make any changes needed to filter on the new shorter prepend. The second change is that I've decreased the allowable size for list messages from 50k to 30k as it will make it easier for some of you to receive messages without having them turned into attachments or rejected as being oversized. If anyone needs to send a message larger than 30k to the list hopefully they will be able to break it down into sections and send it through in parts. Thanks again to Penny for her past contributions and we look forward to having Penny continuing in her continuing capacity as a list subscriber. Joan Young, administrator [email protected]

    1. [MILLER-L] William Frankenberger Miller
    2. Gagliardi Margaret
    3. William F. Miller was born 21 Oct 1824 in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Co, PA. About the age of 14-16 he was sent to Philadelphia, PA to be taught to paint miniatures as he was very gifted. From there he moved to Cincinnati, OH where he lived and painted. He became close friends with a man by the last name of Eaton, with whom he corresponded for many years. I believe that Mr. Eaton also lived in Cincinnati. William moved around and spent time in Louisiana, and New York City as well as other locations. He never married, but I think he died in Cincinnati after 1901. He was the son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Frankenberger) Miller. Does anyone have information on William or Mr. Eaton and his family?
