Cheryl, Thank You Since you already have your family back to the 1600's I doubt anyone can help you.... but I understand that you are trying to help others with your info. So I will add whatever little tidbits of info relative to yours so the two may combine for helping others: Actually the one below contains some people of my family but I consider that to be a mistake. I doubt that we are connected but who knows? David C. Hello Lynda, I would be happy to get any additional information on this line. I have very little, as you can see. I can give you the descendants of David and Apcelia Blackman if you need them. David James Blackman was b. 25 Oct 1803 (censuses say NC, SC, and KY); m. 29 Aug 1824 in Gallatin Co. IL; bur. 30 June 1879 in Mitchellville (Blackman) Cemetery, near Stonefort, Saline Co. IL. He was the first man elected to the IL legislature from West Gallatin Co. (now Saline Co. IL). Apcelia d. 15 Feb 1889, bur. Blackman Cem. 3/4 m. east of Mitchellville, IL. (I assume these are the same cemeteries. Those were the descriptions I found for their burial sites.) I show nine children for them, including my ancestor, David James Blackman b. 1829; m. Mary Jane Vineyard. I only have the names of Absalom Miller and Sarah Armstead, and no other information on them at all except that they lived in Muhlenburg Co. KY in 1806. John Tanner of Flora, IL told me that Apcelia had brothers named James and Stephan, who m. Sarah Hutson. Other researchers through the years have listed possible additional children as William, George W., John, b. 1813, d. 1864, m. 11 Apr 1833 in Gallatin Co. IL to Eliza J. Hudson; Charles, Bryant, and Elijah. Do you know how many children Absalom Miller had? Who did James marry? Thanks for any additional information on this family. Just want to update the list! 2 people graciously volunteered to get the job done of transcribing the files to usable data so we can publish it for the world of genealogists to use. So our appreciation in advance to Debra Miller-Haston and to Fred Miller who offered to work on the files. We can all look forward to a valuable resource being made available in the near future I will keep you posted as to progress. Charles
Charles, I have seen scanned pages that have been put up on family sites, without the "rolling text". I am not sure that is exactly what you have in mind, but it is what major libraries use, and I don't know how they do it. Cornell doesn't have the resources to correct the text and just leaves it to the users as does the Michigan Making of America Site. Not having the rolling text means that one would mean that one would just have to do a lot of reading. But often lines stop just shy of the generation being searched for and IT IS nessery to read reports. A major benefit of the scanned immages is that one can see exactly what was on the page, and not trust that the typist didn't understand what was typed. I don't believe anything has been developed to read hand writing. A drawback is not getting stuck in the belief that any report is gospel. Do watch out for copyright infringement. A work done in 1940 and released by the family may have a valid copyright on the work, and it is possible it was passed on to the institution how owns the collation. If you had to sign a request to get the research, you may of said you would not sell or publish it further, and a list of other clauses which are easy to overlook in our hurry to share. Not having a scanner, I have done my share of typing including having to write for releases. Betty Kinzie (des. of the John Sanford - Sarah Miller family) Charles wrote at the tale end of the post: So can you help us help ourselves? Are you an expert on OCR or scanning in stuff? Do you have or know of an OCR that will work better than mine? Are you an expert typist and want to donate your time to type this stuff and make it available to all? What can you do? Charles
Leslie, Do you know anything about the Gouge family who also lived in Cole Co. MO at the same time as your Millers? Martin Gouge was married to Elizabeth McKinney who was b. about 1795 in Campbell Co. TN. She was the daughter of Henry McKinney, according to other researchers. One paper I saw from Cole Co. stated that Martin Gouge lived in Campbell Co. TN until 1818 when he moved to Cole Co. Other papers put him in Cole Co. a few years earlier. I thought with the similarities between the Kenney and McKinney names, and locations of Campbell Co. TN and Cole Co. MO, that you might have information on the Gouge family, too. My husband is a direct descendant of Martin Gouge and Elizabeth McKinney. Rick also has a Kinney line which interconnects with the Gouge line, and has a Miller connection, also. Martin Gouge's son, Martin, married Martha Hester Gray about 1855 and lived in Texas Co. MO in 1860 and 1870. Martha was the daughter of John George Gray and Nancy Y. McAliley. John Gray's parents were Robert Gray and Mary Kinney. John G. Gray was b. 1793 in Hopkinsville, Christian Co. KY. Robert Gray II was born in Sullivan Co. KY, and married 1781 in TN. All we have on Mary Kinney is that she was b. in TN, and likely d. in Christian Co. KY. Robert and Mary Gray's children, all b. in Christian Co. KY were: 1. Elizabeth Gray b. c. 1782; m. William Jones 2. Nancy b. ca 1783, m. Patterson Crockett 3. Wilson b. 1785 4. Jane b. 1787; m. John Smith 5. Mary b. 179 m. Edmonds Fruit 6. John G. m. Nancy McAliley 7. Sarah b. 1800 m. John A. Lop/Colp? m. 1818 in KY 8. infant 9. Robert b. 1804 m. Elizabeth Inglish 10. Daniel G. b. 1806 m. 1) Elizabeth Catherine Gallion 11. Nicholas b. 1809 m. Lucinda Miller, 4 Dec 1835 in Cole Co. MO 12. Hester Wilson m. Dennis Clifford Do you know anything about Lucinda Miller who married Nicholas Gray? Nicholas was sheriff of Cole Co. MO. Believe he moved to TX in 1847. Do you know where? You are absolutely correct that the "Andrea Files" are a wonderful reference......also correct as to the amount of work it is to retypr them...... I did transcribe it for the COX family......two months of solid typing!!! :-) But well worth it all the same! :-) Good luck finding an easier solution. Finally, one I know something about. But as usual, I've already gotten an exciting charge from your post without you even knowing it. Presley K. MILLER married Elizabeth MOORE on 26 Feb 1846 in Cole Co., MO. Elizabeth is a daughter of John MOORE. He is a child of Thomas MILLER and Margaret KENNEY, who married in Cole Co., MO, on 25 Jun 1822. His father Thomas MILLER was b. circa 1792 in Greenbrier Co., VA(now WV) and d. after the 1850 census of Cole Co., MO. This Thomas Miller was the son of James MILLER and Elizabeth KINCAID (not Kingcard, although that is one of the "misspellings" I've seen before). He lived as a child in Campbell Co., TN ... also known as the Powell's Valley region. His mother Margaret KENNEY was the daughter of James KENNEY and Margaret COLLETT. This older couple were originally from Greene Co., TN, where they married 12 Apr 1791. They came very early into Cole Co., MO ... probably passing through the same Campbell Co., TN to judge by the company they kept. I've another generation or two in the Miller, Kincaid, and Collett familes ... for we share them all. I have a few interesting leads on the Kenneys as well, but no proof. Love to trade info. In my other posting I told you about the Andrea files. Primarily these files cover settlers coming thru or into SC. There is another such resource covering the same sort of stuff in NC that would be the McKubbin files. Ms. Mamie McCubbin or McKubbin was also a pro genealogist of years gone by and her files are in selected libraries around the country. I found both in the Washington Library in Macon, GA. But they are available in local LDS Family History Centers or you can order them for use from the FHC. Charles
About 20 years ago I found an excellent resource for MILLERs [and any other family] that came thru South Carolina on their way west or who settled in SC. This resource is called the "Andrea Files". Leonardo Andrea was a professional genealogist of the 1940 time frame. When he died his lovely daughter donated those files to the world to be microfilmed and placed into selected libraries. If you can find these files you will find a gold mine in research already done for you. There is just no way I could describe adequately the value of these files, way beyond my word power to explain. I have the complete MILLER sections of these files. They are waaaay to volumionus [more than an inch thick file in a 3 ring binder] to retype [certainly not by me as hunt and peck] and enter on the internet but I have scanned two pages to show you the valuable type information that is available in these files IN AN ATTEMPT TO INTEREST YOU INTO HELPING ME find an OCR [Optical Character Recognition]! program that will work with my scanner or any scanner to read and copy these files without so many mistakes. You will se that there are many mistakes in this one page. But how valuable it would be to researchers to have these available on line in readable condition. This if translated into internet language on the web would be the best resource for genealogists that I can imagine. I can scan it easily into a picture but that won't do. It must be brought into MSWORD or MSWORKS or some other word processor so that searches can be done on a series of pages. That is the tricky part. So does anyone have an OCR program that will read and decipher the old pica [or whatever that is below] trypewriter writing???? Or does anyone have one of those voice to type programs that really works so that you can read the file into it and it types what you spoke?
