On the 1851 he was a labourer and by the 1861 he was an agricultural labourer. The one born in Hawes could be yours but Hawes is quite a long way from Pocklington (its in North Yorkshire, Pocklington is in East Yorkshire). Yorkshire is the largest county in England, so big that the Danes split it into three "Ridings" to make it more manageable. It doesn't seem a great distance now but for poor ag labs in 1851, who often walked from village to village, it was quite a distance.
