I have an obituary for my gggrandfather John D. Gibbs which states he traveled from Cooperstown, Otsego County, New York to Madison, Michigan about 1833. There he engaged in the printing trade and about 1836 started for Wisconsin. I would appreciate any links which might locate Madison and give a history of the area. Thank you.

    3. Madison township, was founded in about 1827, it was originally named Lenawee, was renamed Madison in 1838. Seems they frequently called a township a town. Not sure bout why, but have seen it done a number of times. hope that helps.
