    3. This executive order was signed July 13, 2009 - it will take effect October 1, 2009 - unless voted on and overturned by the legislature. If the legislature does nothing, it WILL be effective October 1, 2009. The Library and History, Arts, and Libraries is being split up and put into other departments, such as Natural Resources, Michigan State Housing Development Authority, etc. and the funding/budget for HAL will also be turned over to these departments to use as they see fit. > From: milenawe-request@rootsweb.com > Subject: MILENAWE Digest, Vol 4, Issue 105 > To: milenawe@rootsweb.com > Date: Sun, 26 Jul 2009 01:00:36 -0600 > > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. 3. yes, the legislature can over ride this. It is an executive order that can be over turned, at least that is my understanding. The funding is there for the library till sometime in October, again, my understanding, but the legislature has 60 days to overturn the exectutive order, again, my undersatnding I have a blog at http://reflectionsfromthefence.blogspot.com/ if you read the entries for July 22 there are a number of links that I suggest. They surely describe this better than I and are much better source of the "real Story" than I. Yes, letters NOW would surely help, plus the Hands Around the Library for those who can attend. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: Cherie_in_OC Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.lenawee/5066/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thought I'd pass along this e-mail from Roger Moffat of the Western Michigan Genealogical Society. An event is being planned for August 5. This is worth copying and e-mailing to all your Michigan contacts. "You may be aware that serious funding issues within the State of Michigan are being felt at the Library of Michigan, with Governor Granholm's proposal being to close the Library of Michigan and move the genealogy collection somewhere else. The ramifications of this for genealogy in the State of Michigan are possibly disastrous, with the potential closing of the Library and possible breaking up of the collection that has been accumulated over more than 100 years. The Michigan Genealogical Council is organising a "Hands Around the Library" event at the Library of Michigan on the morning of Wednesday August 5th, and are hoping for a very large turnout to convince the Governor and elected officials of the importance of keeping the Library of Michigan open. The website of the Michigan Genealogical Council with more information can be found here http://mimgc.org WMGS is arranging to have a presence there, and a page on our website has some information at http://wmgs.org/HandsAroundTheLibrary.htm Thank you Roger Moffat Membership and DataMaster WMGS Western Michigan Genealogical Society Dedicated to Gaining Knowledge, Preserving Records and Teaching Others about Genealogy and Family History Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. I think that someone w/ good information should craft a letter that we could use as a prototype from which to write and send a letter to our Congressmen here in the State. I don't want to discourage any efforts, but I think perhaps letters could be as, or more effective than circling the Library. I agree that this is a very serious issue. When is this proposal going to be voted upon?
