On the 1851 he was a labourer and by the 1861 he was an agricultural labourer. The one born in Hawes could be yours but Hawes is quite a long way from Pocklington (its in North Yorkshire, Pocklington is in East Yorkshire). Yorkshire is the largest county in England, so big that the Danes split it into three "Ridings" to make it more manageable. It doesn't seem a great distance now but for poor ag labs in 1851, who often walked from village to village, it was quite a distance.

He had stories about a cousin or uncle that lived there, in the early 1900s. I am very sad that I cannot use him as a historian any longer, as he died in 2004. He had a very sharp memory, and told me of a woman named anna bogardus that lived in new york who was also a relative, however I have little to go on without his history and backgroud.

I don't have access to the England census records, but would like to find out if this John married a Mary or Maria, and if indeed he is the father of Thomas. Believe it or not, Thomas' grave marker-as old as it (1885)is-barely legible and broken in several places-still reads that he was born in Pocklington. I am so thankful to him for leaving that clue for me!! It still amazes me that he wanted that on his tombstone. He must have wanted to let everyone know. I did a search at familysearch.com and found a John Iveson, b. 1799 in Hawes, his father was a Thomas Iveson! Perhaps he named his son after his father! This is getting interesting! Of course I have nothing to prove that this is connected to my Ivesons, but I would sure like to figure this out! -Elise, MN

I don't have a Thomas Iveson yet. I have two John Ivesons but their ages don't match up with being old enough to be yours. One was the son of Robert and born in 1815 in Skirpenbeck. The second was the son of Francis (a tailor) and grandson of Robert, born in 1837 in Seaton Ross. I've looked on the 1851 census and there is a Jonathan Iveson born in Pocklington in 1834 (so about the right age) who was an apprentice tailor to John Watts a journeyman (sort of freelance) tailor. So, if the Jonathan you've got turns out not to be the right one maybe he's a contender. I've also found a John Iveson born in Pocklington in 1799, he was a labourer on the 1851(that's about the right age to be the father of Thomas). Pocklington is not very far from the villages of Skirpenbeck and Seaton Ross and people seemed to move from village/town to village/town almost every generation so there may still be a connection further back ! - more digging needed yet, maybe the 1841 census will help though I haven't heard anything about it on Ancestry.co yet. I've put my tree on www.genesreunited.co.uk, if you subscribe to that send me a message via their site and I can give you access to it in the reply. Sandra

What I do know is my gg grandfather, Thomas Iveson, was born In Pocklington, Yorkshire in January 1829. He immigrated to the US (Wisconsin) in abt 1848-1851. I have found a (suspected) brother, Jonathan, who also left England for Canada about the same time, whom I found in Montreal in 1881 (census) with his family. (Name misspelled Ivenson) But he was born in Pocklington also. On Thomas' death certificate it was indicated that his father's name was John. I suspect the Michigan Ivesons are connected to the Wisconsin Ivesons because apparently some of the MI Ivesons cmae to MI via Canada. (Not very concrete, obviously) Anway, I could love to compare notes about your Ivesons to see if there is a connection. They probably are all inter-related, but how I do not know. -Elise, MN
