I have reason to believe Charles died in Lenawee county sometime around 1850. I have also seen his name given as Hoey, and the name is often misread and indexed as Hay. Charles H. Hoy married Mary Ann Banks in Redding, Fairfield county, Connecticut on 11 August 1822. The family was listed in Weston, Fairfield County, Connecticut in the 1830 census, and in Washtenaw County, Michigan in the 1840 census. On 11 August 1823, my gg-grandfather George W. Hoy was born. Although George had married Sarah Lovejoy Root well before the official census date in 1850, Sarah was listed by her maiden name and still living at home in that census, residing in Manchester. George was not found in the census at all in 1850. His obituary stated that his family left Connecticut about 1831, stayed in New York about 1 year, then Toledo, Ohio "for some time". George moved to Illinois in 1885, stating he had lived in Michigan for 50 years. Adelia A. Hoy was born 15 January 1828 in Connecticut and died single in Manchester, Washtenaw county on 15 October 1853. She was living with a Mills family in Manchester during the 1850 census. William H. Hoy was born about 1830 in Connecticut. He was listed in the 1850 census of Manchester, living with the Ingraham family, and signed as a witness to brother George's marriage there in 1850. William married Sarah J. Hunt on 24 December 1851 in Jackson county. They had one son named Clarence in 1852, and William died shortly thereafter. Emily A. Hoy was born about 1835, possibly in New York, and married Charles Bostedor in Lenawee county during 1858. In the 1860 census, the couple was still residing with his parents, John and Nancy Bostedor, in Franklin township. Emily died in 1865, but I do not have the place of death. Charles Bostedor was listed in Manchester as of the 1870 census. The couple had a daughter Clara and a son William. Charles and Mary Hoy may have also had two other daughters, as suggested by the census. Whether they died young or married, I do not know. Charles also married "Mrs. Nancy Conklin" in Washtenaw on 11 July 1843. I do not know Nancy's maiden name, and I have found no further records on the couple in Washtenaw County. Charles, Nancy, their daughter Mary born about 1844 (possibly married William Smith in Manchester in 1861), as well as Charles' son George and daughter Emily are all missing from the 1850 census. It's very possible that Nancy may have had some of her Conklin children still living with her in 1850. The 1860 census shows a John Conklin, age 8 living with her, possibly a grandson. I did not find Nancy in the 1870 or later census records. I note from postings concerning the First Congregational Church in Clinton, Lenawee county, that a William and Emily Hoy joined in 1848. This might well be the son and daughter of Charles Hoy. Those records show that a great number of the members of that church had formerly belonged to the presbyterian church. A Bostedor was also a member of that church. I know that George Hoy joined the presbyterian church "at an early age". Mrs. Nancy Conklin/Hoy married E. Scriver in Lenawee county on 12 April 1855. He is not listed with Nancy in the 1860 census of Clinton, presumably having died before that time. An "Emerie" Scriver is also listed among the Congregational church membership, and I believe that might be Emerick Scriver. There was a younger Emerick Scriver in Clinton, possibly Emerick Jr., who served in the Civil War. In summary, Charles H. Hoy and family were missing from the 1850 census. It's possible that his children William and Emily joined a church in Clinton during 1848. His widow remarried in Lenawee during 1855, as well as his daughter Emily in 1858. For reasons yet unknown, but probably more than just a coincidence, brothers William and George named sons Clarence, while sister Emily named a daughter Clara. Any information on Charles, his children, his second wife Mrs. Nancy Conklin or her other husbands, would be grately appreciated. Thank you!

My great-great-aunt, Cora Burger, is shown in the 1880 census living with Abner Brainard as his neice. I am thrying to figure out how it is that she is Abner's neice. Where is the connection? I've never heard of a Genealogy Society at Hudson, but there's a wonderful Hudson "Library" with it's fine Obituary collection and there is a Hudson Historical Museum open a few days per week, mostly in the afternoons. The Libray hours are Mon - Tue 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Wed. 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. Thursday closed - Fri & Sat 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Eldon Hills @ Petersburg, Mi.
