BARNABY, EX-STATE LEGISLATOR, DIES AT 81 HORACE T. BARNABY, former State Legislator and for nearly a half century active in legal, fraternal and civic affairs in the Grand Rapids area, died early Wednesday after a long illness. He lived at 1235 Hope St. SE., and was 81 years old. Retired since 1950, Mr. Barnaby received his law degree at the University of Michigan. He also studied in the office of the late William Alden Smith. In 1903, he entered practice here in partnership with the late Judge Clark H. Higbee. He continued active in his law work until his retirement. CLERK, SUPERVISOR Mr. Barnaby served Gaines Township as Clerk and Supervisor early in his career. From 1901 to 1904 he served the Second District in the Lower House in Lansing and from 1909 to 1913 he was a member of the State Senate from the 17th District. He was a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1907 and 1908. Born in North Star Township in Gratiot County, Mr. Barnaby moved with his family to Kent County when he was 5. Son of a minister who was the first settler in North Star Township, he was born in a log house. Mr Barnaby was a member of York Lodge No. 410 of the Masonic Order and of the Cowan Lodge of the Knights of Pythias. He also was a member of the Bards, and for 12 years served as secretary of the old Optimist Club. Barnaby was a member of the Grand Rapids Bar Association and the State Bar of Michigan. Surviving are his wife, MAUDE, two sons, LORRAINE A. and ALVIN R., both of Grand Rapids; two daughters, MRS. HENRY B. FAIRCHILD and MRS. DONALD J. WILLIAMS, both of Grand Rapids; two step-daughters, MRS. D. JEAN SHIELDS and MRS. ELEANOR SCHMIDT, both of Grand Rapids; a brother, MILTON of Lansing; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A son, HORACE M., was killed in action in World War I. Services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the Metcalf Chapel, with Rev. Lester A. Kilpatrick of First Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Oakhill Cemetery.
