BERKHOF Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Neland Avenue Church for Prof. Emeritus LOUIS BERKHOF, first President of Calvin College Seminary, who died unexpectedly at Blodgett Memorial Hospital Saturday of an apparent heart condition. He was 83. Prof. Berkhof, author of 22 books and pamphlets, was also a department editor for the Banner and DeWachter, church publications. TRANSLATED His most noted work is "Systematic Theology," which was translated into several languages. Prof. Berkhof, who retired in 1945, was born in The Netherlands and came to Grand Rapids when he was 8. He was a graduate of Calvin College Seminary and of Princeton Seminary. He became the first President of the institution in 1931 after 25 years of teaching duties. The policy had previously been to select a rector from among the faculty each year. MEN'S SOCIETY Prof. Berkhof was a member of Neland Avenue Christian Reformed Church. He served as President of its Men's Society for 10 years and was on the Board of Directors of the Young Men's Federation of the church. He is survived by his wife, DENA; two sons, DR. WILLIAM of Mt. Clemens and JOHN of Grand Rapids; four daughters, MRS. WILLIAM MEYER, MRS. SIDNEY STUK, both of Grand Rapids; MRS. PETER Y. DeJONG of Pella, Iowa, and MRS. JOHN BROUWER of Denver, Colo.; 19 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Garfield Cemetery. Zaagman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
