He had been an educator more than 50 years. In addition to Grand Rapids, the Davenport Institute system includes business schools in Kalamazoo, Lansing, Detroit, Bay City and Saginaw, with a total enrollment of more than 3.500. Mr. Davenport was a member of the National Business Teachers Association, the Michigan Business Education Association and the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce. He attended East Congregational Church.
