I have finished the race. I have kept the path.now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness. Robert James Thompson Sr, 80, of Kentwood, went to be with his Lord and Savior on July 11, 2009, at Metro Health Hospital. Robert was born on July 11, 1929 in Kalamazoo, son of the late Glenn and Hilda Thompson. Robert met and married the former Shirley Joann Rowan and they moved to Grand Rapids in 1972. Shirley predeceased Robert on May 4, 1993. Robert spent 1951-1953 in the Army, stationed in Germany. He enjoyed going cross-country to Army reunions to see his Army buddies. Robert drove for Graff trucking company retiring in 1985. He enjoyed the open road, especially when accompanied by Shirley. He enjoyed his retirement, going from one of his children's home to the next, or traveling across the USA. He loved going to military air shows and military museums. Robert was also predeceased by his parents; his son Howard on July 20, 1989; two grandchildren; brother Richard of Kalamazoo; and father-in-law Herbert Swifink. Robert is survived by his children Sue (Pat) Thompson of T! erra Alta, West Virginia, June Egan (Frank Kwiatkowski) of Belmont, Shirley (Larry) of Mattawan, daughter-in-law Bonnie of Gobles, Robert Jr (Valerie) of Midland, Curt (Debbie) of Paw Paw, and Cindy (Bud Kraft) of Holland/Byron Center; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law Nella Swifink of Grand Rapids; and brother Harold (Ali) of Kalamazoo. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel (2800 Burton St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546). Interment Woodlawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be given to Faith Hospice.
