Hi everyone, I wanted to announce the following. I hope someone has research interests in the village of Alton. September 16, from 10 am - 5 pm, We are celebrating the Village of Alton in the year 1896. This was the heyday of the village. We have two goals, 1. to get the empty historical church building opened up for those who wish to see it, and 2. to give people a view of what life was like in the Alton village in 1896. 1. The Alton church building was built in 1868 and has always been a community type of building. At one time three congregations alternated using the building. It has been empty for over thirty years, and is in desperate need of help. It belongs to the community, so we'd like to see it used for historical educational purposes. The committee who oversees the building has approved and is excited about beginning the collection process of a research/archive room. We would REALLY appreciate those who have researched the area and families in the area to share with us. We will have some fund raiser things to try and raise some money such as baked goods and booklets and materials put together for the day on the history of the village. 2. To accomplish this we have a cemetery tour set up highlighting some of the people who were buried by 1896, and the bounds of the cemetery in 1896. This includes some of our pioneers, and civil war casualties. We also have educational displays set up regarding different areas of life in 1896. We will have a presentation on the Swiss in Alton, along with an old fashioned hymn sing. The schedule is below. Please feel free to email with any questions, or for directions. We are located on the intersection of Lincoln Lake Ave and 3 mile, 6 miles straight north of Lowell. Thanks for your time!
