On Dec. 7, 1844 a committee was appointed composed of, among others: Dennis McCARTHY $4.00, William McCARTHY $3.00, John McCARTHY $30.00, Maurice SCANLON $2.00. The History of Kent County, 1881, published by Chapman gives a sketch of the history of the parish prepared by Dennis McCARTHY, one of the founding members. The earliest parish records from St. Patrick's begin only in 1854. John SULLIVAN was a pioneer in Vergennes Twp. He was born in Bantry, County Cork, June 3, 1812, sailed in 1836 from Cork to Quebec. He went to Ohio & worked on the Wabash & Erie Canal, then to Kent Co. in 1843. He helped to organize St. Patrick's Parish, aided in the erection of four successive church bldgs. & donated land for three of them. His wife, Johanna SCANLON, was born in Tralee, County Kerry, in 1830. Dennis McCARTHY was born in the townland of Kilmacahill, Parish of Cloyne, Nov. 29, 1818. The parish is very old for that area (only St. Andrew's Cathedral parish is older in Grand Rapids diocese) and seems to have very good records. Daniel Cary Sullivan grew up in London and came to USA in 1870s. His mother was a McCarthy but both those names are very, very common in Bantry. My Morrissey / Morasy / Morrisy ancestors came from Bunclody (Newtownbarry) County Wexford, Ireland. There are many other Bunclody descendants in Parnell area (DOYLES, etc.) but not clear on any connection. I have entered much info from the "1844-1994" book in my Family Tree software. I've "rescued" three old photographs including one which is specifically identified as that of Bernice MCELVAIN which was taken at the Gillett Studio in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Bernice is just an infant at the time the photograph was taken, likely sometime in the 1890's. The second photograph is of an unidentified woman, taken at the M. P. Thiele Studio in Grand Rapids, MI. It was most likely taken in the 1880's with the women appearing to be in her teens or 20's at the time. The third photograph is also of an unidentified woman, taken at the Wykes Studio in Grand Rapids, MI, it appears to also have been taken in the 1880's with the woman in the photograph appearing to be in her 50's or 60's at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I was able to locate Bernice and her family as follows: Bernice MCELVAIN b. 17 Apr 1899, died Sept 1986 in Grand Rapids, MI Census records provide the following: 1900 census of Big Rapids, MI: Frank MCELVAIN, age 35, born Nov 1864, married 4 years, born MI, parents birthplace unknown, Locomotive Engineer Ella M. I don't know much about the Sullivan or Scanlon families, but my husband's cousin was married to Henry Sullivan (born 31 May 1903 and died 08 May 1967). I believe they were the last of the family to actually live on the farm next to the church. They married late in life and had no children. I believe the house and farm went to the church. They are buried in St. Patrick's cemetery right across from the church.
