REYNOLD J. KIRKLAND was also an amateur CONCHOLOGIST. The following article appeared in "The Nautilus" - A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Interests of Conchologists, Vol. XIII, May, 1899 to April, 1900, Pgs. 11-12. In this article is discussed a species of mussel that was named after Dr. Kirkland and it talks about his collecting a lot from the Grand River in Grand Rapids, MI. 7. PIS. KIRKLANDI, n. sp. Mussel of medium size, somewhat oblique, well inflated when mature, very little so in the young, high, rather oval in outline; superior margin strongly, inferior moderately curved, posterior slightly truncated, passing into the superior by an obtuse, rounded angle, antero-superior slightly curved or almost, straight, sloping toward the rounded anterior end; scutum well, scutellum slightly marked ; beaks somewhat posterior, high and prominent in the mature, low in the young mussel, with stout ridges, highest at the posterior and slanting towards the anterior ends, slightly sinuous on the outer sides; surface with very coarse, rather regular striation, dull, rugulose, straw colored in the young, light grayish in the adult with a light zone along the margin ; shell rather thick, nacre almost glossy, appearing bluish in old specimens, muscle insertions distinct; hinge stout, hinge plate broad; cardinal teeth of moderate size, rather high up on the plate, the right one angular, its posterior part thickened, with or without a groove ; below it is a deep excavation; left cardinal teeth : the anterior rather stout hut its edge acute, the posterior oblique, slightly curved ; lateral teeth stout, the outer ones of the right valve quite small ; ligament strong. Long. 4, alt. 3.8, diam. 2.7 mill. Habitat : Michigan, Illinois, Ohio. In a lot from the GRAND RIVER, at GRAND RAPIDS, MICH. collected by DR. REYNOLD J. KIRKLAND, in whose honor the species is named, there were over two hundred specimens, most of them young and half grown, in company with Pis. cotnpres&nm Pr. (thousands of diferent forms), Jail ax, crucialum, punctatum, and a number of other species. A few from Berry Lake, Chicago, were sent by the Chicago Academy of Science (Mr. F. C. Baker), and one single valve was found in the Anglaize River, tributary to the Maumee River, Lake Erie drainage, by the writer, in 1893, in company with Pis. compressniii Pr. PIS. KIRKLANDI is related to P. compression Pr., and more so to fallax St. From the former, it is at once distinguished by the more rounded outlines of the adult specimens ; the young are higher in the anterior part, and the mussel is nearly square, while the young of contpressinu are more triangular ; and in the latter, the beaks are higher, the (young) mussel is of comparatively larger diameter. From P. fallax it differs by its larger size, the coarse striation, the shape of the ridges and the grayish color. New Philadelphia, Ohio, March, 1899. ******************************* DR. REYNOLD J. KIRKLAND was also a member of the SCHUBERT CLUB of GRAND RAPIDS (Currently THE SCHUBERT MALE CHORUS) and is shown in a group photo of the chorus in 1887 which is in the Schubert Collection (Collection #351), at the Grand Rapids Public Library, Grand Rapids, Michigan. BEETS AFTER STROKE REV. HENRY BEETS, a minister in the Christian Reformed Church for more than half a century and distinguished as an author and editor, died Wednesday at his home, 737 Madison Ave., SE, after a short illness. He was 78 years old. MR. BEETS was taken ill Oct. 10, when he suffered a stroke at Holland, where he had gone to attend a meeting of the Michigan Historical Society, of which he was a member. He was returned to his home and had been under the care of his son, DR. W.C. BEETS, Grand Rapids physician. Eight years ago Mr. Beets retired after 52 years with the church. At the time of his retirement, he was Denomination Director of Missions. Since his retirement, he retained many church and public activities. Mr. Beets had planned to sail in December for Curacao and Dutch Guiana, where he planned to visit Moravian missions, for which he had raised funds when their support by The Netherlands was cut off during the war. He also planned to visit The Netherlands next May. BORN IN Koedykn [Koedyk], The Netherlands, he had been honored twice by the Queen. In 1934 he was made a Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau and more recently had been made an Officer. Mr. Beets came to the United States in 1886. In 1895 he married CLARA POEL of Grand Haven, who died last year. He was ordained to the ministry in 1895 after being graduated from Calvin College and Seminary. He came to the LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed church as pastor in 1899 after a four-year pastorate at the Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, Ia. HIS PASTORATE at the LaGrave Avenue church continued until 1915, when he accepted the pulpit at the Burton Heights Christian Reformed Church. He held this post until 1920, when he became Denominational Director of Missions. In 1902 he became the Denomination's Stated Clerk and held this post until 1942. He was President of the Grand Rapids Ministerial Conference in 1930 and 1931. HIS INTEREST in missions led to much of his writing. From 1904 to 1929 he was Editor of The Banner, denominational publication. His first writings were published as a book, titled "Triumphs of the Cross." He wrote a number of books of a catechetical nature, the most complete history of his denomination, and a larger work, "The Christian Reformed Church," covering not only the history of the denomination but its creed, liturgy, distinctive principles, church government and church order. Most of his writings, including poetry, were printed in both Dutch and English. He wrote in the Dutch language books dealing with the lives of McKinley and Lincoln. MANY TIMES he was named delegate to the General Synod of the church and his counsel often was sought not only in church affairs but also in civic matters. He served on the Grand Rapids Public Museum and Library Boards. Mr. Beets had traveled over the world in the interest of missions. In 1911 the honorary degree of L.D. was conferred on him by Muskingum College. He was the longest continuous active member of the YMCA and a resolution lauding his work was adopted Wednesday noon at a meeting of the association's board. "DR BEETS served his generation well because he served his God humbly." said Rev. John C. DeKorne, who succeeded Mr. Beets as Secretary of Missions. SURVIVING ARE three sons, HENRY NICHOLS, ABEL JASPER and DR. WILLIAM CLARENCE BEETS. The body will be at the residence until noon Saturday when it will be taken to LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church to lie in state until 2 p.m. Following a prayer for the family by Rev. W.D. VanderWerp, services will be conducted by Dr. George Goris, pastor of LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church. The sermon will be given by Dr. John C. DeKorne. The eulogy will be delivered by Rev. Seth VanderWerf of Holland, Mr. Beet's associate in publishing the Missionary Monthly. Graveside services at Woodlawn Cemetery will be conducted by Mr. Beet's nephew, REV. HENRY BEETS Grand Rapids, the Christian Reformed Church and all the far-flung peoples reached by the missions of his denomination lost a friend, a tireless leader and wise counselor Wednesday morning when death came for Dr. Henry Beets. The influence of his 78 years of devotion to his fellow man and his 52 years of ministry will live long after him. Dr. Beets, was born in The Netherlands, rose to high place among the Holland-American folk of his adopted country, won the esteem of all with whom he came in contact here and throughout the world he traveled so widely, and was honored by the sovereign of his native land who made him an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau. Preacher and scholar, administrator and humanitarian, Dr. Beets led a busy life. The chronicle of his positions as clergyman, editor and, director of missions is long. The list of books he authored is imposing. The honors accorded him are impressive. Withal he was a modest and humble man, quiet, sincere, energetic, a man who despite the burden of his many responsibilities in and for the Church he served found time to take his full part as a citizen of his adopted Nation and of the City in which he lived for nearly half a century. In Grand Rapids, he will be mourned and remembered not only by the Holland-American groups whose spokesman he so often was and by the denomination of which he was a fore-most representative, but by those he served directly as one-time President of the Grand Rapids Ministers Conference, as a member of the Grand Rapids Art and Museum Commission, in the activities of the Rotary Club, and in countless civic and charitable works. EBERHARD DIES Friends of supermarket king L.V. EBERHARD say there wasn't much that could keep him away from work or the golf course-two of the great passions in his life. But on Sunday, six months after stepping down from EBERHARD FOODS after 70 years in the grocery business, the 89-year-old Mr. Eberhard died at Sherbrook Nursing Center following a lengthy illness. He left behind a chain of 14 stores in West Michigan, a fraction of the 41 stores he operated at the peak of his business. The stubborn, sometimes controversial Mr. Eberhard, while known for butting heads with union representatives, executives and even his own family, also left a trail of philanthropic commitment, including sizable donations to Grand Valley State University and John Ball Zoo. "He was about the most optimistic man I ever knew," said Meijer Inc. Executive Committee Chairman Fred Meijer. "I am going to miss that old rooster." In the late 1930's, early in their respective careers, Meijer said Mr. Eberhard asked him if he wanted to come to work with him. Although he never accepted the offer, Meijer said they remained friends-though competitors to the end. "We were very much head-to-head competitors." Meijer said. "But that didn't bother us when we got together." In the waning years of his business career, Mr. Eberhard left a deeper imprint on the community around him, highlighted by a $1 million pledge in 1980 to further expansion of the John Ball Zoo, one of his favorite charities. In 1954, Mr. Eberhard paved the way for the children's zoo, giving $18,000 to that cause. Mr. Eberhard topped that in 1988 with a $1.25 million gift to GVSU, including $1 million for the downtown Grand Rapids facility named after him, the L.V. Eberhard Center. The additional $250,000 was used to establish a scholarship program to provide up to $1000 for as many as 20 GVSU students. GVSU President Arend Lubbers said he recalls talking to Mr. Eberhard about fund raising efforts for a downtown campus. A week later Mr. Eberhard called back. "I've been in this area for years and known him for years, so nothing about L.V. ever surprised me." Lubbers said. "I think everyone in the West Michigan region can understand how important that facility is for the education of the people in this region." Lubbers also knew Mr. Eberhard on the golf course, one of his favorite haunts away from work. He was an active sponsor of the Grand Rapids Charity Golf Classic, which evolved into the Greater Grand Rapids Open, and was thrilled to tee it up with such golfing notables as Gary Player, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus. While less than a great shotmaker, Lubbers said, Mr. Eberhard made up for it with his will to win. "He really enjoyed the contest. Even though he had a high handicap, he could every once in a while come in with a sensational shot and win the money," Lubbers said. Mr. Eberhard was born Aug. 27, 1902, and he was 12 when his father died, leaving a family to operate GRAND RAPIDS HOME DAIRY CO. He was fond of telling the tale of how he and his mother started a grocery story in 1918-when he was 16-with nothing more than "$25 and a sack of sugar." The first store was at 1142 Wealthy St. SE. After four years in the business, Mr. Eberhard decided to return to high school, get his diploma and go on to law school. He got his high school diploma in 1922, but stayed only one semester at Grand Rapids Junior College. "That ended my college career and my aspirations of becoming a lawyer," Mr. Eberhard reported in a GVSU publication released at the opening of the Eberhard Center. Mr. Eberhard took over the business in 1929 and built his first supermarket 10 years later, at 1551 Wealthy St. SE. The first store in town with automatic self-opening doors, it set the standard for others to follow. He was fascinated with devices that set his store apart, introducing in 1947 a checkout machine using a rotating checkout system. He also introduced grocery baskets that enabled a parents to carry babies in a basket while they shopped. Mr. Eberhard was also a leader in the use of grocery cooperatives, helping to found GRAND RAPIDS WHOLESALE GROCERY CO., now SPARTAN STORES, INC., as well as several other cooperatives. At his peak, Mr. Eberhard commanded 41 stores and wielded a powerful position as the unchallenged man in charge. Over time, however, union problems, management conflicts and declining sales began to erode the strength of his chain. In 1983, Mr. Eberhard fired several directors of the company after they tried to remove him from the day-to-day operations of the company. Mr. Eberhard out-maneuvered the dissident board members and was upheld in court, but the dispute was merely a prelude for battles to follow. That same year, his daughter, BETTY TARDY FORREST, sued her father after she was fired from the company after 27 years. In 1985, Mr. Eberhard fired his grandson, DAVID EBERHARD, who had been promoted to vice president the year before. Explaining the firing, Mr. Eberhard said simply: "He thinks differently and has different ideas than I do. And I have no further comments, period." David Eberhard at the time said his grandfather's management style did not allow him to delegate responsibility. "He is interested in every bad check that comes through and reprimands store managers for every bad check," he said at the time. In October of that year, Mr. Eberhard's negotiations with Spartan Stores to sell off his remaining 22 stores fell through when company employees and their union filed suit in U.S. District Court, alleging the sale violated the rights of workers who owned stock in the company through a stock ownership plan. That suit was settled in 1986, but it left bitter feelings on each side. Mr. Eberhard continued to wield singular control over the company even though he had sold a majority of the company's stock to an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. He served as the stock plan's sole administrator and trustee. In April 1990, lawyers for United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 951 asked the U.S. Department of Labor to investigate the stock ownership plan and Mr. Eberhard's role as its only administrator. Union officials charged that Mr. Eberhard inflated the value of the stock to benefit himself when he authorized the sale of employer stock-owned buildings in exchange for stock. Longtime friend Matthew Perrin said Mr. Eberhard was not an easy man to get to know. "He was a two-sided type person," said Perrin, owner of Foodtown supermarket, 425 Fuller Ave. NE. "He was very tough at times, but that was because he always demanded the best out of everybody. But if you ever needed a helping hand he would be the first one." Perrin said he bought his first grocery store from Mr. Eberhard in 1967. "I bought it on the golf course," Perrin said. "I didn't know it until the following Monday when he told everybody I bought it." Mr. Eberhard is survived by his wife, RUTH; his son, DONALD; and his daughters, BETTY FORREST and JOAN GALLAGHER. He was married twice previously. The family will receive visitors Tuesday at Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service at 4291 Cascade Road SE from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be Wednesday at noon at Park Congregational Church at 10 E. Park Place. In lieu of tributes, the family suggests donations be made to either the L.V. Eberhard Scholarship Fund at GVSU, Junior Achievement or the Eberhard Adventure World, Children's Exhibit Area, at John Ball Zoo. THE GRAND RAPIDS PRESS, Grand Rapids, Mich., Mon., 25 Nov. 1991, Pg. A1, Cols. 1-5 and Pg. A4, Cols. 1-3 ***************************** According to an Ancestry.com record, L.V. Eberhard was the son of CLARENCE J. EBERHARD (1879-1914) and PEARL BUFFHAM. Author: MichaelCronk28 Surnames: JUDD, FREEMAN, LEONARD, LeMESSURIER, STANSBURY Classification: obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.kent/8666/mb.ashx Message Board Post: DEVOTED CIVIC LEADER DOROTHY LEONARD JUDD DIES DOROTHY LEONARD JUDD in 1978 received an award from her alma mater that read simply, "Earnest in Living and Earnest in Serving." That phrase neatly wrapped up her life. Judd was one of the driving forces behind the fledgling League of Women Voters in the 1920s, and her devotion to public service continued well into the 1960s, when state voters elected her to serve at the Michigan Constitutional Convention. Services for Judd will be 3 p.m. Friday at the Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St. NE, where she had been a lifelong member. She died Tuesday night of natural causes in her apartment at Porter Hills Presbyterian Village. She was 90. "She was terrifically dedicated to good government," HARRIETTE FREEMAN said of her mother. "She worked very hard for women in government." In a letter written to then-Gov. George Romney, Judd summed up her philosophy of public service as she resigned from the State Civil Service Commission: "Seldom can one 'point with pride' to the tangible achievements. But there are other rewards, even in defeat. There is the exhilaration of freedom to serve in the public interest, the right of each person in our American democracy to try to affect public affairs without oppression." Judd taught American history and government at Central High School from 1921-25. She had graduated from Central in 1915 and received her degree from Vassar. In an interview with the Press years ago, Judd said the League of Women Voters launched her into community service. In 1924, she joined the LWV, and four years later she was elected president of the state organization. She was cast in the national spotlight when she headed the National League's Efficiency in Government Committee from 1932-34. Between 1932 and 1966, Judd served on numerous committees and commissions. Michigan residents elected her in 1961 to the Michigan Constitutional Convention where she served on the Committee on Local Government and led its subcommittee on county government. Judd once said she was most proud of Article IV in the 1963 constitution which required the Legislature to "provide for the protection of the air, water and other natural resources of the state from pollution, impairment and destruction." "That, I think," she said, "is really mine." Judd was appointed by Gov. George Romney to the Civil Service Commission in 1963, and served as its chairwoman two years later. Before she resigned in 1969, she ironed out a policy on employee relations-one of the toughest jobs she had ever tackled, she once said. For more than 30 years, Judd was a member of the National Council of the Municipal League and in 1957 she received its Distinguished Citizen Award. Her work on civil rights led to an appointment to the advisory committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. In 1958, she visited Germany through the U.S. State Department to study that country's government and educational system. Judd authored books, pamphlets and other documents, including a civics textbook and materials for the League. She also wrote, "The Art and Architecture of Fountain Street Church." In 1971, she received an honorary doctor of humanities degree from the University of Michigan, which noted she had "enjoyed the rare privilege as a civil service commissioner of strengthening principles she herself helped formulate." Her community service followed a family tradition. WILLIE THOMAS STANSBURY, her mother, was one of the early women graduates of Purdue University and a charter member of the University Club, which evolved into the American Association of University Women. Stansbury was an original member of the Welfare Union, today known as United Way. Judd's father, HARRY C. LEONARD, served as a Grand Rapids city commissioner from 1934 to 1942. Judd's grandfather, CHARLES H. LEONARD, founded the Leonard Refrigerator Co. His firm constructed the first electric refrigerator, which is featured at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. Charles Leonard campaigned for a city filtration system in 1917 that eradicated typhoid epidemics. He also was one of the founders of Fountain Street Church. Judd's husband, SIEGEL [JUDD], founding partner of the law firm, Warner, Norcross and Judd, died seven years ago. She is survived by her two daughters, HARRIETTE FREEMAN, of Grand Rapids and DOROTHY LeMESSURIER of Cambridge, Mass; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Family members request that memorial contributions be made to the Fountain Street Church Memorial Trust Fund, Planned Parenthood or the Grand Rapids Public Library. CASLOW, EX-EDITOR, DIES WINFIELD H. CASLOW, 70, retired weekly newspaper editor, early radio's "Main Street Crusader" and congressional candidate of the 1930s, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Caslow, of 3425 Canal St. SW and formerly of 2208 McKee Ave. SW, had suffered a stroke last week. Born in Guthrie Center, Iowa, Mr. Caslow had lived in Grand Rapids since his youth. Mr. Caslow was a "campaigner," lending his oratory and thinking to varied causes: He was the little merchant's voice against the coming of chain stores, he fought Grand Rapids' unsuccessful annexation forays into Wyoming and he campaigned for a statewide network of water pipelines and Wyoming's Lake Michigan water system. Mr. Caslow, a chairmaker by trade, first became involved in crusades for "peoples' causes" when he successfully opposed a slaughterhouse planned for the South End in the 1920s. His first bid for public office in 1932 was against Rep. Carl Mapes: he lost by a small margin. Mr. Caslow's second try for Congress in 1938, also resulted in defeat. After his last try for Congress, Mr. Caslow was appointed to the Michigan Public Service Commission. He also canvassed the state on behalf of the Rural Electrification Administration program. Mr. Caslow founded the Southwest Community Alliance, forerunner of the current Wyoming Star, and in 1956 became editor of the Wyoming Advocate Southkent News and continued in that position until retiring in 1967. Mr. Caslow was the first recipient of the Wyoming Jaycees' Presidential Citation in 1964 that lauded him for his services to the city. "Without Win Caslow, we would still be an outdated township." Said former mayor Edward F. Wiest. "It was Win Caslow who officiated at the birth of the city of Wyoming." Mr. Caslow was a member of the Church of the Open Door. His wife, Adah, died in 1966. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Clarence HINKEN of Wyoming. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel, Rev. Wendell Babcock and Rev.
