My mother was Lucille Mary Jane Joyce, daughter of CHarles Wellington and Clara Belle Joyce, who were married in Jan 1898. Who is your grandfather? Charles Wellington? Am I right in thinking that CW's father was a Henry Joyce, a shoemaker in Grand Rapids? I used to live in Bloomingdale, IL and spend summers in Ludington, MI. Have a daughter in Byron Center, and nieces and nephews in Storeyville and Jackson MI. My twin and I will be 63 this Sun, our older sister would have been 65 but she passed away in Lansing 2 years ago. Our mother, Lucille died July 2000 in Jackson, MI at age of 97. So are we related? I live now in Keller TX, just north of Fort Worth TX. Just moved here. email me separately so we can continue talking. Janet

Joyce Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kFB.2ACE/552.555 Message Board Post: Are you referring to Charles Wellington Joyce, the one who died 1/17/1924 in Ohio? In 1920 Census he was listed on Bridge Street with a Francis/Fan... If so, he was my grandfather. He married Clara Wolfe Stockham in Traverse City, MI Jan 21,1898. They had 2 daughters, Dorothy Arvilla Joyce in 1901 and Lucille Mary Jane Joyce in 1903-1905. My mom lied about her age. Charles and Clara were divorced sometime between 1910 and 1920. In 1920 they were living in separate residences, she with the girls and he with another wife. My mom said she used to see him on the street and he would ignore her. She even remembered this just before she died last year at the age of 97! Do you know more about the family? i believe he was the son of Henry Joyce, a shoemaker in Grand Rapids. Rumor is, from my twin sister is that he was illegimate son of some big shot in england. Have been trying to trace them since they married in 1898 until he/she show up at an address on Cherry Street in G.R. in 1911 directory. Let me know if we are related. Dorothy didn't have any children that I know of, my mother had 3 girls, my older sister and my twin and myself. Charles was 49 when he died and I didn;t see any children listed with him in 1920 census.

    3. Janet, In regard to your questions, Marriages and Divorces - the Grand Rapids Public Library has the index to the marriages for Kent County on film until the late 1990's. They also have the city directories on film for the time period you are looking for and if there is anything on the local businesses, they will have it in their manuscript collection. The Grand Rapids newspapers are on film here. You will find the collection much more complete than at Lansing.
