This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. He was forty-five years of age. The funeral services will be held in the residence Monday evening at 7:45 and in St. Mary's church at 8. Pg. 5, Col. 3, Art. 2 EX-ALDERMAN SCHMIDT DEAD. Passed Away Yesterday After a Lingering Illness. Ex-Alderman Charles SCHMIDT, a well-known resident of this city, died yesterday morning in his residence, 158 Summer street, after a lingering illness of several years, aged forty-six years. Mr. SCHMIDT came to Grand Rapids with his parents in 1855 and has been a resident of the city ever since. A year ago he sought the more genial climate of Texas, but as there was no hope of regaining his former health, he returned to the city in which he had spent most of his life, to spend the remainder of his days. He was the senior member of the firm of Charles Schmidt & Bros. of Canal street, and Schmidt Bros. on West Fulton street, and was a member of the common council for one term. He leaves a widow, three sons and a daughter, Miss Josie. The funeral will be held from St. Mary's church Monday morning at 8 o'clock. THE EVENING PRESS, Grand Rapids, Mich., Fri., Sept. 25, 1896, Pg. 2, Column 4, Article 1 LAST MARK OF RESPECT The Council Will Attend the Funeral of Ex-Alderman SCHMIDT The council committees last evening appointed a committee to draught resolutions upon the death of ex-Alderman Charles SCHMIDT, who died yesterday, and it was decided that the council will attend the funeral in a body. It will be held from St. Mary's church next Monday morning at 8 o'clock. Mr. SCHMIDT was elected to the council from the Ninth ward in 1893 and retired in 1895. Alderman Wurzburg succeeding him. A large number of property owners assessed for the Grandville avenue improvement appeared before the special committee having the matter in charge last night and registered their objections. Nothing was done with them and the committee will visit the property. The committee on buildings decided to grant Judge Burlingame's request for a telephone in his private office. THE GRAND RAPIDS HERALD, Grand Rapids, Mich., Friday, Sept. 25, 1896, Pg. 5, Column 4, Article 4 AFTER LONG ILLNESS Ex-Alderman Chas. SCHMIDT Died Yesterday Had Been a Resident of the City Over Forty Years--Well Known in Business Circles Ex-Alderman Charles SCHMIDT of the ninth ward, died at his residence, No. 158 Summer street, yesterday morning after a long illness. For two years he had been a sufferer from dropsy and though he was attended by some of the most skilled physicians and surgeons the disease finally caused death. Twice he was operated upon and about a year ago he went to Texas in hopes that the change of climate would prove beneficial. Doubtless his life was prolonged by his trip and careful treament but the end was not unexpected. For many months he had been confined to his home. Deceased was born in Germany forty-six years ago and came to Grand Rapids with his parents in 1855, having resided here ever since. He was elected alderman of the ninth ward in the spring of 1893 and served one term, being succeeded by Alderman Frank Wurzburg in 1895. He was senior member of the firms of Charles Schmidt & Brother, monument dealers on Canal street, and Schmidt Brothers, general store keeper! s on West Fulton street. He was a member of the St. Joseph society and at one time its preisdent. Mr. SCHMIDT was a reliable business man, a highly respected citizen and a public-spirited councilman. He was well and favorabley known, particularly among his native citizens and though his serious condition had been generally known the announcement of his death will be received with much regret. Deceased leaves a widow, three sons, Theodore, Fred and Frank, and one daughter, Josie. The funeral will take place next Monday morning at 8 o'clock from St. Mary's church, corner of First and Turner street. Member of the council will attend in a body. Hello, I am researching in Kent County.... Thomas Richard CROW b. 30 Sept 1890 married #1 Violet Mae JACKSON b. 4 Feb 1893. Married #2 Ellen STULL. Married #3 Kate MATHEWS. Thomas is the son of Joseph W. CROW b. 1873 and Marion Alice CLEVELAND. Marion married #2 Balsor CROW, cousin to Joe. I don't think this family is related to the Ada Crows. Frederick William WAGNER married Anne James May FOSTER b. 1883. Also, some of the EDSON and MORRIS family from Ottawa County moved to Kent County. I would love to hear from any related families! Hi Carl, You know...Veenstra sounds very familiar...still I do not see it in my family file. I have a van der Veene but that would not be the same. Your name sounds Friesien, as in Friesland Province in the NL. So any connection to Zeeland, NL families would have to be in Kent, Ottawa or Wayne Counties. Do you possibly have a Stoutjesdyk(ijk) connection in your family? That and the vd Burg/Berg genealogies are the only other ones I am familiar with that might have had a Veenstra. Found it: Henrietta Stoutjesdyk b. 1896 (perhaps Stout or Stouten used later) married First Veenstra. I don't know what First means (first marriage or given name First). Probably they were born in Gr. R, may have married there or in Wayne Co. and may or may not have moved to Wayne Co. As you can see, little is known about them but Henrietta's ancestors are known. Please let me know if this Veenstra is one of yours.
