On the ship passenger list there is an addrress for Cornelis Flipse. It is 6060 Cresent St. From the information I found so far the Flipse family have been in the province of Zeeland since the late 1700's. Perhaps earlier than that. Not sure of their origons prior to that. Thanks again!

Since the Flipse being Dutch was a revelation to me, I had to look that up and yes they were Dutch. I remember a little old lady who lived on Alpine Ave in a yellow house covered in gingerbred with a yellow picket fence and dark green shades. She had never married and had lived there all her life. There was quite a write up in the GR press when she died a few years ago. Her grandfather had built the house. I think she was the last in her immediate family. So I looked up the census and found no Cornelius Flipse but did find the Flipse family for that yellow house: 1147 Alpine Ave NW 1930 census Lawrence Flipse 60 owner worth $5000 b. Neth carpenter parents b. France immigrated 1880 Marjorie wife 59 b. Neth par b. Neth Jack son 25 S, Jean dau 23 S, Connie dau 20 S. all born Michigan I think Jean was the old lady. 1920 Census Laurence 60 immi 1886 Nat 1891 Holland par b. Hollnad carpenter Margie wife 53 immi 1885 b. Holland par b. Holland Andrew son 26 b. MI Jennie dau 23 b. Mi Jacob son 18 b. MI Cornelia dau 12 b. MI There are two more Flipse families: Peter b. Holland and Abraham b. Holland who also has a dau named Cornelia I have to admit I would have never guessed that Flipse was Dutch. Swierenga has an immigration/emmigration list that was published. The GRPL has a copy. If it's on line I don't know where. I wonder, could Flipse be Friesian?
Greetings, Mike; I cannot help you with the Flipse family, but the other name you mention is interesting to me. I have a friend that I have known since kindergarten in GR, MI who said his grandfather was Leonard A. Versluis. He said he owned the radio station WLAV named after his initials. My friends name is Robert Werkema. Is the Werkema name in your family, also? I am a cousin to Bob's brother. Another interesting thing about your post is a similarity to your name. I also had some friends in GR by the name of Heyer; Robert and Roger who were twins. Robert passed away last year, I think. Any connections? Carl W. He moved to Chicago from Grand Rapids in the late 1800's early 1900's to find better work opportunities. There he met my grandmother and they settled there. Their children were my father and his sister (Mildred). He was the son of Andrew and Johanna (Muller)Centilli. Ben had four brothers and a sister, Frank, Lloyd, Adolph, Andrew and Rose One brother was nicknamed "Babe" perhaps because he was the youngest ? Maybe it was Adolph as I never heard about him growing up, just great uncles Frank, Lioyd, Andy, Babe and aunt Rose. I had the opportunity to meet them all except my grandfather Ben as he died in 1937 in Chicago. I was very young when I met them. (10-12 yrs.) But we went to see Aunt Rose every year as she was my dads favorite. I was told by my dad that his lineage came from southern Italy in the early 1800's then left there to escape oppression and settled in Poland where my Great Grandfather Andrew was born. He ! left for Prussia as a young man and served in the German/Prussian Army then met my Great Grandmother (Johanna Muller) married her and immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Grand Rapids Mich. Any info you may have that adds or contradicts to this, please send me. My name is James R. Centilli, I'm 61 yrs old and am a retired firefighter living out my years in Beautiful sunny Fl. I have a son James Scott Centilli (33 yrs old) that lives with his wife and daughter in Kalamazoo, and a daughter, Kristie Lee Centilli that Lives in Ann Arbor Mich. My E-Mail is [email protected]

Some of the information is not accurate, but sometimes you can get a lead. If they both came over as children, they should be listed along with their parent(s). It helps, too, that you know the date of their immigration, so that you can verify the names, etc.

Hi everyone, I wanted to announce the following. I hope someone has research interests in the village of Alton. September 16, from 10 am - 5 pm, We are celebrating the Village of Alton in the year 1896. This was the heyday of the village. We have two goals, 1. to get the empty historical church building opened up for those who wish to see it, and 2. to give people a view of what life was like in the Alton village in 1896. 1. The Alton church building was built in 1868 and has always been a community type of building. At one time three congregations alternated using the building. It has been empty for over thirty years, and is in desperate need of help. It belongs to the community, so we'd like to see it used for historical educational purposes. The committee who oversees the building has approved and is excited about beginning the collection process of a research/archive room. We would REALLY appreciate those who have researched the area and families in the area to share with us. We will have some fund raiser things to try and raise some money such as baked goods and booklets and materials put together for the day on the history of the village. 2. To accomplish this we have a cemetery tour set up highlighting some of the people who were buried by 1896, and the bounds of the cemetery in 1896. This includes some of our pioneers, and civil war casualties. We also have educational displays set up regarding different areas of life in 1896. We will have a presentation on the Swiss in Alton, along with an old fashioned hymn sing. The schedule is below. Please feel free to email with any questions, or for directions. We are located on the intersection of Lincoln Lake Ave and 3 mile, 6 miles straight north of Lowell. Thanks for your time! Shantell Ford Celebration schedule- 10 - Cemetery tour 11 - Swiss in Alton 12 - Lunch available by donation 1 - Old fashioned hymn sing 4 - Cemetery tour
