To identify the actual area included in the "Toledo Strip", draw a line from the bottom of Lake Michigan across the top of Ohio. The difference between that line and the actual current boundary line for the State of Ohio was the disputed land which was called the Toledo Strip. Forgot to answer your question. The only Toledo I know is in Ohio. What are now Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Wisconson used to be part of French Canada until the French and Indian War when Britain took over until the American Revolution and we took over. The Northwest Ordinance or an Ordinance for the Establishment of a Government for the Territory of the United States Northwest of the River Ohio established the boundaries for the future states. The boundary line was drawn across the lower tip of Lake Michigan causing the future states of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois to have no access to the Great Lakes. As Ohio, Indiana and Illinois became states before Michigan, they just pushed their boundary lines a little bit farther north. Chicago was really in Wisconsin and Toledo was really in Michigan. When Michigan finally pushed their boundary line back to where it belonged, putting Toledo back in Michigan, Ohio sent their militia to duke it out with Michigan's militia at the disputed boundary. This Toledo War is still fought every year when U of Michigan and Ohio State play football - that game is coming up soon. But Alaska is in Kent County. Do you think the polar bears are confused? ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 18, 2006 1:02 PM Subject: [MIKENT] Toledo Strip -- Kent County? > Does anyone know if an area in 1838 called Toledo Strip was in Kent > County? > Some early land records show this purchase by a William H Brown. Does anyone know if an area in 1838 called Toledo Strip was in Kent County? Some early land records show this purchase by a William H Brown. He did build a saw mill in 1848 in Alaska, earlier named Brownsville after him. I am wondering if this is the same piece of land? Helen Brown
Women who were the wives of veterans could only be buried in the veteran's grave at the Soldier's home, not in a grave of their own. Don't know if there was an exception if a woman was a resident of the home but would suppose if she were a resident of the home as a wife not as a veteran in her own right, she would be excluded from having her own grave in the Vet's Cem so would assume she might be buried wherever her husband is buried or she could be buried in a section of Oak Hill Cem which had a - not pauper's graves, something like permit graves - mostly single graves dating from c. 1918. Just a guess. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 17, 2006 10:11 PM Subject: Re: [MIKENT] Obit for Mary Ann Eagan Heaton Sheratan > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kFB.2ACE/5712.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > The April 13, 1923 Grand Rapids Herald?
