But in the meantime I will be able to work with the info on Thomas Almy that you sent. (Or at least give it a good try.) I do not think it is necessary at this time to have a scanned copy since you did such a good job of extracting the information.

    3. The Kent County Poor Farm was called Maple Grove and still existed up to 1966 if not later as I knew a lady who lived there. They had large wards with about ten beds in each. Every inmate had an iron cot/bed and a wooden orange crate. The people who lived there were old, sick, poor and had no families. There were also young babies kept there too, maybe foundlings. They lived at taxpayers expense and were mainly forgotten. There was a cemetery nearby, adjoining the Plaster Creek flood plain. The land was purchased by the Luther Home which has a big nursing home there. You can try calling them if you like voice mail. This area was annexed by the City of Grand Rapids but the City has never maintained the facility or cemetery. The taxpayer doesn't keep track of current old people why do you think they kept track of them 150 years ago? Old people are shuffled into nursing homes and forgotten today just like they were 150 years ago. Nothing has changed except more people live in cardboard boxes. At one time the records were kept by Kent County but I doubt that they have then handy anymore. They threw out tons of stuff when they moved to a new building and the old-timers are gone now and the younger generation has thrown out even more "useless" stuff. I would try the Kent District Library as the first place to look and if you find anything, would you post the availability of any records as I searched a little bit to determine the info in the second paragraph but did not check the KDL. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, November 25, 2006 7:33 PM Subject: [MIKENT] Van Dusen/Van Dozen Kent County Poorhouse. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Van Dozen, Van Dusen > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kFB.2ACE/8129 > > Message Board Post: > > The 1850 census shows five paupers living in what must be the original > Kent County Poorhouse. 3. Well now, you shouldn't post such a general question as you'll get a response from me. LOL 1. A Mc name is very hard to search for in Ancestry's index. Do an advance search for Gaines twp, Kent County with just the most unusual first name.. Then you can just look at every family where that name occurs. Since you know the township that shouldn't be so many names, you could even look at every page in the township. Maybe ten or twenty pages? No big deal. For example: My grandpa's name was Jan Vander Mark, Vander Mark being the surname. The indexer assumed his name was Jan Mark Vander, Mark being his middle name so I found the family by just searching for Vander. You could search for just Mc* or Mac* > I understand that Kent became Grand Rapids, but I don't understand this reference in relation to the rest of your query. Kent Twp was renamed Grand Rapids Twp in 1842 which has nothing to do with Gaines Twp. These two twps aren't even adjacent to each other. And the name change for a township has nothing to do with the modern location of the federal post office in the City of Grand Rapids which is what the SSDI gives, the location of the post office where their last check was mailed. The City of Grand Rapids includes land from four townships: Grand Rapids, Walker, Paris and Wyoming. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, November 24, 2006 6:50 PM Subject: [MIKENT] Further to McCrodans in Gaines, Kent, Michigan. > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kFB.2ACE/8127 > > Message Board Post: > > I understand that Kent became Grand Rapids, but I don't understand why a > guy (William McCrodan d. 1921 or his son William d. 1969) shows up on the > SSDI for Grand Rapids but doesn't show up on Ancestry.com's 1920 or 1930 > US Census lists for the entire state.
