Author: fairlady1959 Surnames: Johnson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.kent/8567.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I've already searched the censuses and have positively identified Chester's adoptive parents (see previous listing). The date of birth is only a guess, based on those records from 1910-1930. I have photos of Chester as a child and adult, which were in the possession of a member of my own family. I know Chester spent time in Cuba, as he sent photos and postcards from there to relatives. The 1930 census lists a Chester B. Johnson, 26, (born Michigan, as were his parents), and wife Dorothy E. Johnson, 25, who was born in North Carolina (as were her parents). This census shows at the time, the couple was living in Tampa, Fla. and that Chester was working as an "operator of a moving picture machine." Chester was the adopted son of William A. Johnson and Charlotte "Lottie" Johnson-Johnson--children of Barton Johnson and Nelson Johnson, respectively. Chester's childhood was spent in rural Rockford and Cedar Springs. He married a woman named Dorothy and had a son, also named Chester. I believe Chester, Sr. also spent time in Cuba in the 1920s and may have settled in Florida--possibly the Tampa area. Conflicting records show Chester's middle initial I. or B. I've been stuck here for years, even went to Michigan and called Burlington, Vermont to try and figure stuff out, all without success. So let me ask: I have been to the Archives, and the only military files I found did not include parent information. Where/what did you look? And when you say you got info from the CW Graves Registration Officer, how does one do that? I would love to get copies of the records for my files. We had been speculating that William H. was related, but we couldn't figure out how. As for Jane: she actually died in Chicago (we don't know why she was there, or I've forgotten), and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Grand Rapids in an unmarked grave next to a child (Frank A.) who died just before his first birthday. I asked at that cemetery, but it didn't seem that James was there. Originally Jane bought six plots, apparently used two, and the rest reverted to the cemetery at some point. There are some other descendants of James Sr. still living in Grand Rapids. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Can someone tell me the best place to locate a death certificate. I just want to verify the name of the deceased parents. This was Elizabeth Brooks Brownell and she died January 31, 1923 in Kent County. Since Elizabeth Brooks is a fairly common name, I need verification of her parents names. This is a hard family to track down. Thanks for any help given. Marge Williams
