Funeral services were Tuesday, April 15, 2008 at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, MN. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji, MN. Arrangements were entrusted to the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji, MN. James Edgar DeYoung was born July 24, 1944 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Edgar and Elizabeth (Huizinga) DeYoung. At a young age, the family moved to Redlands, CA. He attended college at the University of Redlands receiving his undergrad and master's degree there. After college he taught junior high history in Redlands and then took an offer to teach and take classes at Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL, where he met his future wife, Kathleen Hamer. They married January 24, 1970, in Oberlin, Ohio. After their marriage, they moved back to Redlands where he taught elementary school for the next 30 years. In 2001, they moved to Longview, TX to be with family and in March 2008, they mo! ved to Bemidji, MN. He enjoyed trap and skeet shooting sporting clays, reading and Kai, his dog. He was a member of the Reformed Church of America as well as a Deacon. He also taught Sunday school and Catechism in the Reformed and Christian Reformed churches. While in Texas he was a member of Christ the King OPC. At his death he was an Orthodox Christian. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; son, Stephen DeYoung of South Canaan, PA; two daughters, Elizabeth (wife of Matthew) Berge of Bemidji, MN, Jamie DeYoung of Bemidji, MN; grandchildren, Kathleen and Thomas Berg; sister, Nancy Casey of Bemidji, MN.
