Age 81 Of Kalamazoo Joanne died peacefully at home on Friday, January 15. She was born December 13, 1928 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Stanley and Mathea Powley. Joanne was educated at Oberlin College and the University of Chicago, receiving a Master's Degree in Social Work at the latter. She also met her husband, Ray, at the University of Chicago at a dormitory party, organized by Joanne, reportedly when Ray sought to register a complaint about the music that was being played (Joanne's selections!). Despite this bumpy start, they married shortly thereafter in 1952, and Ray survives her. She was devoted to her practice as a clinical social worker at the Child Guidance Clinic from 1967 to 1987. After retirement, she initiated the Head Start Parent Literacy Program in Kalamazoo, which endeavored to improve the reading skills of Head Start parents. Throughout life, Joanne maintained an abundant curiosity about the world around her. In particular, as a member of the People's Church of Kalamaz! oo, she led weekly Forum programs from 1996 to 2007 on topics ranging widely from foreign affairs to medical ethics to poetry. She continued this practice after she, Ray, and their son Eric moved to the Wyndham Retirement Community in 2005, where she lived at the time of her death. Besides husband Ray, she is survived by her two sons, Eric (of Kalamazoo) and Martin (of Chicago). As well, she is survived by her brother, Gerald Powley (of Empire, Michigan); and three grandchildren, Amelia Camperlengo (Hurst, Texas), Linda Huber (Bronxville, New York), and Matthew Huber (Sequim, Washington). Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service is planned for Monday, January 18, 2010 at 12:00 Noon at the People's Church, 1758 North Tenth Street, Kalamazoo, followed by a reception commencing at 2 PM at Wyndham, 2300 Portage Road (Phillips Street entrance). Details on memorial donations will be forthcoming at the time of the memorial service. Arrangements by: REDMOND Funeral Home 4100 S.
