Helen Louise was born on April 26, 1917 in Kalamazoo, MI, a daughter of Allison and Helen Mae Chisholm. She was a lifelong resident here and a graduate of Western State Teachers College in 1939. Helen was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo; a volunteer at the Shepherd's Center and a former member of the Westwood Garden Club. After moving to Friendship Village she served on the staff of the Villager by interviewing and writing articles about new residents. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald C. Smith on April 12, 1997 and by a brother, Gordon F. Chisholm. Surviving are two sons, Linden (Ginny) Smith of Arlington, VA and Sheldon (Beverly) Smith of Portage; four grandchildren, David L. Smith of Evanston, IL, Jeffrey Smith of New York City, Josie Smith of Vicksburg and Patti McDowell of Lansing; two sisters, Dorothy Wallace of Savannah, GA and Florence Bowman of Houston, TX; many niece! s and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, January 26 at the First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo, 315 W. Michigan Ave. with the Rev. Dr. MaryBeth Sarhatt officiating. Private entombment will follow at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Helen's memory be made to Friendship Village employee appreciation fund.
