Formerly of Galesburg, MI Passed away peacefully on December 14, 2009 surrounded by his immediate family. Dr. Underwood was born November 30, 1921 in Wellsburg, W. Virginia, son of Clarence E. and Beatrice L. Underwood, then moved with his family to Ohio. He attended Mount Union College where he graduated with honors and met his future bride, Marian. He went on to Ohio State University where he received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry. In 1952 "Bud" and "May" moved to Michigan where he was employed by the former Upjohn Company (now Pfizer Pharmaceutical) for 25 years as a research virologist. Bud enjoyed his 23 acre "farm" outside of Galesburg where he and May raised their three children and transformed the open fields into a sanctuary of mixed woods, a large pond, crop lands, pastures and gardens. An ever-changing menagerie of farm animals and uncommon pets kept things lively. Bud especially enjoyed watching and participating in sports activities. Upon his retirement, Bud and May packed up and moved ! to southern California to help care for his ailing parents. They loved the area and soon found tranquility in the small community of Descanso, settling into their new home within walking distance of beautiful Cuyamaca State Park. Bud loved to hike the 100 miles of trails meandering through the park and was well-known for his diligent routine of picking up trash along the roadways of Descanso. He supported May in her efforts to help create a charming library for the local school and community and became the library's grounds-keeper. Recently Dr. Underwood and his wife moved to Fredericka Manor in Chula Vista where they resided in a cottage surrounded by beautifully kept grounds of flowering trees, shrubs and a pond, and could feel the ocean breezes. Surviving are his wife, Marian, two sons, Gary E. Underwood of Descanso, CA, Robert K. Underwood (Karen Wilson) of Galesburg, MI, daughter Beth K. Underwood (John Hogg) of Missoula, MT, granddaughters, Bree Hogg and Keely Hogg o! f MT, and sister Peggy Allen of Cleveland, TX. In support of the medic al research to which he devoted so many years of his life, Dr. Underwood requested that his body be donated to the UCSD Medical School for research. No formal memorial service will be held. The family asks that any donations be made to the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park Interpretive Association (cuyamaca.us) or a favorite park in your area.
