If Daniel lived in Kent County, check the Kent County Probate Court Index. See if he was involved in ANY case, during the time period when he entered the asylum. A judge from Kent County could have sent him to the hospital: a committal order. You could ask or request copies of the papers in his file. That probably will answer the questions you have.
