She was born on April 3, 1922, to William and Winifred Young in Muskegon, Michigan. She spent her childhood in Muskegon and Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1941. Following high school, she was employed as an office clerk at Checker Cab Manufacturing Company. As a young lady, Betty volunteered at the local USO club, where she enjoyed playing the piano and entertaining. Victor Gerald Mabus was a young soldier, stationed at Fort Custer near Battle Creek, when they met at the club. They were married on June 1, 1945 in Kalamazoo. Betty was raised, married and was active in The Methodist Church. For over twenty years, Betty managed Compere Fabrics in Portage, Michigan. She was involved in Girl Scouts, the Portage 4-H Organization and recently, The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW. Betty was an active homemaker. She loved to knit and sew many beautiful pieces fo! r her family and friends. "Busy hands/happy hands" describes her devotion to handicraft projects. Betty and Vic moved to Poncha Springs, Colorado, in 1997, to be closer to their sons and daughter, and to retire in the mountains, which she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Gordon Young, of Brethren, Michigan. Betty is survived by her husband, Victor; brothers, William Young and Jack Young of Kalamazoo, daughter Cheryl (Joe) Tischer, Salida, sons Victor (Jayne) Mabus, Salida, Jan (Jerrie Dance) Mabus, Lakewood; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, and many dear friends at Columbine Care Center in Salida. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 16, at 11:00 AM at the Salida Steam Plant Annex, Salida.
