He was preceded in death by his son and best friend Gary Schoolenberg, his parents, Jacob and Jennie Schoolenberg; and his sister, Jean Dutton; John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Schoolenberg (Huyser); his children, David (Deborah) Schoolenberg, Cathy Duinkerken, Karen (David) Barritt; his grandchildren, Julia and Daniel Schoolenberg, Ron Nussbaum, Kelsey and Arielle Duinkerken, Heather, Laura, Alyssa Barritt; his brother, James (Jan) Schoolenberg. John graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, Class of 1947. He was a member of Bethany Reformed Church in Kalamazoo. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1951. John served in the Marine Corps during the Korean War. He worked in the finance department of the City of Kalamazoo; as the Finance Director for the City of Portage and the City of Wyoming. A time for relatives and friends to visit with John's family will be held from 2-4 & ! 7-9 PM Tuesday at the Cook Funeral Home in Grandville, 4235 Prairie St. SW (west building). Funeral services will be held 11 AM Wednesday at Grace Reformed Church, 3330 Burlingame Ave, in Wyoming.
