Of Kalamazoo, MI Died Monday afternoon, January 21, 2008. Jessie was born June 10, 1924 in Galesburg, Michigan, a daughter of Mantle and Jessie (Creque) Downs. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident most of her life and was employed with George Sage Insurance Agency years ago. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Alton and Gary Shafer; four sisters and a brother. On June 22, 1946, she was united in marriage to Norval D. Shafer, who survives. Also surviving are a son, David Shafer of Kalamazoo. Anatomical donation to Michigan State University has taken place. Friends may meet the family 2-4 and 6-8 PM Thursday at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S.
