Gene was born September 12, 1923 in West Frankfort, IL. He served in the US Army in WWII, was a POW in Germany for 3 months, and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He retired in 1984 from Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital. Gene was preceded in death by his mother, Bessie Rice, and his wife, Mary Rice, in 2002, and several step-brothers and sisters. He is survived by his daughter, Linda (Michael) Van Atter of Martin, MI, grandchildren Randy Van Atter of Allegan, James (Brandi) Van Atter of Otsego, MI, great-grandchildren Katelyn and Kaylee Van Atter, a sister, Madeline Ross of West Frankfort, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 1 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the PARCHMENT REDMOND Funeral Home 2300 East G Avenue 269-349-7735 where funeral services will be held Thursday, September 2 at 2 PM, with Rev. Jim Dyke officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kairos Dwelling, 2945 Gull Rd., Kalamazoo 49048, or Borgess Foundation (VNA and Hospice), 1535 Gull Rd. Suite 405, Kalamazoo 49048.
