She was born February 7, 1923 in Vincennes, IN, the daughter of Leslie and Susan (Emison) Gee. Mary was a 1943 graduate of Purdue University and then was employed by The Upjohn Company as a bacteriologist. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church in Kalamazoo. Mary was an avid bowler and was a member of the Kalamazoo Area Women's Bowling Association (KAWBA) Hall of Fame, and also the second recipient of the Michigan Coach of the Year of the Youth Bowling Association (YBA). Later, golf became her sporting love. She was among the first women members of Kalamazoo Elks Lodge #50. She was active in supporting many organizations over the years with her time and energy, such as Community Chest, Borgess Services League, and Loaves and Fishes. On June 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Norman A. Melzer, who preceded her in death on June 21, 1989. Also preceding her in death were her! parents; and brother, Wade Gee. Surviving are daughter, Leslie Melzer of Denver, CO; son, Norman R. Melzer and his wife, Lana Melzer of Indianapolis, IN; and two grandchildren, Nicholas Melzer of Santa Monica, CA and Sara Melzer of Vail, CO. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, February 13, at First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo, 129 S. Park Street, with Rev. Matthew Laney officiating. Private interment will be in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Elks Major Projects, Loaves and Fishes, or Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund.
