He was born September 12, 1934 in Kalamazoo, the son of Adrian and Johanna (Kannegieter) Alphenaar and had been a lifelong area resident. For over 50 years he was a professional painter for Alphenaar & Mejeur Painting & Decorating. Ken was a former member of First Christian Reformed Church where he had served as deacon and elder and was currently a member of Grace Christian Reformed Church. He had served on the Kalamazoo Christian School Board and on the Board of Park Village Pines. On September 24, 1954, Ken was united in marriage to the former Joyce Meulman, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Sallie (Michael) Stripp of Richland, Mary Alphenaar of Portage, Nancy (Jeffrey) Westendorp of Holland; grandchildren, Michael Westendorp, A.J. Westendorp, Lauren Westendorp, Bethany Stripp, Sarah Stripp and Nathan Stripp; in-laws, Henry Kiel of Portage, Laura Alphenaar of Rochester, NY, Paul (Jena) Meulman o! f Gobles; and several nieces and nephews. Ken was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Alphenaar and a sister, Muriel Kiel. The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 29 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 South 9th Street. Funeral Services will be held 11 AM Monday, June 30, 2008 at the Grace Christian Reformed Church (1724 Whites Road) with Rev. Dr. Harry Arnold and Rev. Timothy Bero, officiating. A private family interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park.
