He was born June 14, 1924 in The Bronx, New York, the son of Lawrence and Louise Bell (Allchin) Bristol. His family later moved to Pelham, NY and he spent many summers on Shelter Island where he developed a life-long love for sailing and tennis. Norman attended Yale University and participated in Yale's Naval ROTC program. Upon graduation, he entered the U.S. Navy and served aboard a destroyer in the World War II South Pacific theatre. Norman and his shipmates saw action in Leyte Gulf, Suriago Strait, and Okinawa. Following the war, Norman earned a law degree from Columbia University and worked several years for the law firm of Root Ballantine in New York City. He married Doreen Kingan in 1952. He moved with his young family to Battle Creek in early 1954 and joined the legal department of the Kellogg Company. During nearly 25 years with Kellogg, Norman rose to the position of Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretar! y and was a member of the Kellogg board of directors. He was also elected to the board of the First of America Bank Corporation. Norman left Kellogg and joined the firm of Howard and Howard in Kalamazoo, where he continued to work until he retired in 1993. He kept an active retirement, traveling with Doreen and lending his legal expertise in many areas including the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy. Norman moved to Gull Lake in 1961. He loved the Lake and advocated tirelessly to improve its quality. A strong supporter of education, he was a member of the Gull Lake school board, 1963-1970. He helped launch several improvement projects including a major upgrade to the high school facility. After the death of Doreen, his wife of 49 years, Norman married Sally Hume and continued their shared love of travel. They traveled widely, visiting all of the continents, and made many new friends. They toured Africa shortly before his death and were planning a summer trip to Alaska. In! addition to Sally, Norman is survived by his sisters, Louise Ransom o f Shelburne, VT and Ellen Hamilton of Naples, FL; his sons, Charles L. of Hopkinton, NH, Norman, Jr. of Westford, MA, Alexander of Los Angeles, CA and Barnaby of Silver Spring, MD and their families including seven grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 11:30 AM on Monday, June 23, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church, 321 West South St. in Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, or the charity of your choice.
