Of Portage Formerly of Cooper Center Mrs. DeHaan passed away Monday afternoon, February 11, 2008 at Alterra Wynwood. She was born October 8, 1916 in Casco Township, Allegan County, one of five children to Oscar and Ruth (Fowler) Burger. A 1936 graduate of Plainwell High School, Alice and Jim resided in Eastwood for over 50 years before she moved to Portage. She was employed at Northeastern Junior High School as a manager of the cafeteria for 10 years, until her retirement in 1971. She was a member of the former Eastwood Church of God. Alice was a very loving and kind mother and grandmother. On September 4, 1937, she was united in marriage to James DeHaan. They were married for over 54 years. Jim preceded her in death on February 3, 1992. Also preceding her in death are her parents; one son, Allan DeHaan on May 6, 1990; son-in-law, Bill Channells on January 11, 2008; four siblings, Dorothy Stockwell, Elgie Dunham, Fred Burger, and Flossie Toepper. Surviving are her daughter, Nancy Channells of Portage; four gran! dchildren, Mark (Janet) Channells of Richland, Susan (Donald) Lumbard of Kalamazoo, Christy DeHaan, and Thomas DeHaan; nine great-grandchildren, Jason, Christopher, Holly, Suzanne, Daniel, Allisa, Tobias Joseph, William, and Veronica; four great-great-grandchildren, Cole, Cruz, Braeden and Camden; daughter-in-law, Judy DeHaan and brother-in-law, Bill Toepper. Funeral services for Mrs. DeHaan will be at 3:00 PM on Friday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue, with Pastor Richard Hertsel, of Center Avenue Church of God, officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Thursday at the funeral home.
