John was born June 27, 1929 in Redkey, IN, the son of R.C. Owens and Christine VandeHorst. He was employed at Nickel Plate Railroad for two years, after which he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After discharge from the Army he was employed for 32 years at General Motors. John was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo, a 32nd degree mason and a member of the Quincy Lodge #230 F&AM in Elwood, IN and the Order of the Eastern Star Lodge #345 in Swayzee, IN. He was preceded in death by an infant son John Leroy Grady and by two sisters, Alice Pyle and Pat Abernathy. On October 15, 1953, he was united in marriage to the former Marilyn Austin, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter Betty Louise Grady of Kalamazoo and a son Kenneth Nils Grady of Columbus, OH; a sister Dorothy Bishop of Muncie, IN; several nieces and one nephew. Services will be held at 2:00 o'clock Friday at the Langeland Family ! Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. with the Rev. Dr. Mary Beth Sarhatt officiating. Entombment in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. Friends may meet the family Wednesday from 6-8 PM and Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM with Masonic Services by The Mattawan Lodge #268 F&AM at 7:30 PM. The family suggests that memorial contributions in John's memory be made to Riley Hospital for Children, 702 Barnhill Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46202.
