Of Kalamazoo Henry went home to be with his Lord on Thursday morning, February 21, 2008. He was born August 1, 1925 in Kalamazoo, the son of John and Elizabeth (Koning) Sopjes and has been a lifelong resident. During WW II, from 1944-46, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. For over 20 years, he was a self-employed carpenter and then for 19 years he was employed with Bronson Hospital, retiring as maintenance construction supervisor. He was a longtime member of the Grace Christian Reformed Church, where he had served on the council. Henry enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family. On December 10, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Theresa Post, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and son, Joan (Jack) Bosscher of Grandville and James (Diane) Sopjes of Portage; grandchildren, Michael (Krista) Bosscher, Steven (Lynn) Bosscher, Beth, Mark and Scott Sopjes; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sophia and Ella Bosscher; brothers, Tony Sopjes and Don (Carol) Sopjes; sisters-i! n-law, Adrie Sopjes, Henrietta, Ann and Gertrude Post, Jean Stoneburner and Daisy DeKruyter and many nieces and nephews. Henry was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Alfred and John Sopjes. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street. A private family graveside service will be held in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery followed by a memorial service to be held 1:00 PM Monday, February 25, 2008 at Grace Christian Reformed Church (1724 Whites Rd.) with Rev. Dr. Joseph Brinks, officiating. Memorials in Henry's memory may be directed to Grace Christian Reformed Church, Kalamazoo Christian School Association, or Hospice Care of S.W.
