He was born in Coldwater, MI, January 28, 1942. Dave grew up on Wall Lake, Michigan, and attended Delton Kellogg High School, graduating in 1960 as Valedictorian of his class. He was offered a full scholarship and attended Kalamazoo College, receiving a Masters equivalent in Industrial Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering, and was honored as top Engineering graduate. While he was in college, he participated in a work-study program with Clark Equipment in Battle Creek, and was honored as the top student to ever participate. Upon graduation, Dave worked for General Motors as a production engineer, and then spent 15 years with Humphrey Products in Kalamazoo where he became Vice President for Manufacturing. After moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 1981, Dave held several positions with software startup companies: Qantel and a spin-off CIMS where he was VP for Operations; Relevant Business Systems in San! Ramon as Director of Education, Training and Documentation; and most recently with Rootstock Software Systems, Inc., where he was a principal in the company and has been instrumental in development of manufacturing software and training. Dave is survived by his wife, Julia Donahue Thayer, Aptos, CA; mother, Jeanette Schmidt, St. Cloud, Florida; sister, Valli Thayer McDougle, Denver, CO; sister, Jean Thayer Gemrich, Delton, MI; and brother, Tom Thayer, Chevy Chase, MD; son, David Dort (VA); four stepchildren and two granddaughters. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010, from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Aptos Community United Methodist Church, 221 Thunderbird Drive, Aptos, CA 95003. A second memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2010, at his sister Jean Gemrich's home on Gull Lake, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to favorite charities in honor of David Marshall Thayer.
