He was born April 9, 1932 in Kalamazoo, the son of Wilbur and Nilah Mann. Don was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. On October 20, 1952, Don was united in marriage to Helen VanDyken. He was a lieutenant for the Kalamazoo City Fire Department from 1958 until his retirement in 1982. He also was a volunteer firefighter for Comstock and Lakewood Fire Departments and was employed by Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport Fire Department. He served as Captain on all three fire departments. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Helen Mann; their four children, Don (Darla) Mann, Randy (Dianne) Mann, Cindy (Leonard) Campbell, and Carrie Newcomb; seven grandchildren, Christa (Chris) Kermode, Jason (Jennifer) Mann, Jerrod Mann, Nathan Mann, Chad (Jennifer) Newcomb, Tonya (Leo) Rodriguez, and Kelsey Newcomb; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce Noland, Joanne Tiffany, and Pat (Ted) Skartsiars; two brot! hers, Dean (Yvonne) Mann and Wendall Mann; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; and one sister, Linda Stratton. Funeral services for Don will be at 11:00 AM on Wednesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Comstock Chapel, 6121 King Highway. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family from 5-8 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to Alzheimer's Association or Comstock Firefighters Association.
