Of Kalamazoo Passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2008. He was born March 30, 1927 in Kalamazoo, the son of Garrett and Pauline (Oswald) Schlukebir and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. Gene had worked for Sutherland Paper/James River Corporation in sales for 38 years. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1949, where he played on the baseball team. Following graduation, he played professional baseball for one year, after which, he played for Sutherland Paper on the 1951 National Championship Team. Gene was a member of Fourth Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and a deacon and had served his country in the United States Army. On September 21, 1951, he married the former Katherine Moerman, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Susan (James) King of Mattawan, Daniel (Connie) Schlukebir of Kalamazoo and David (Kristine) Schlukebir of Salem, CT; grandchildren, Eric (Jana), Beth, Kalene, Chad, Jessica (Brandon) of AZ and Tom; great-grandchildren, Trenton, Kate a! nd Ayla; a brother, John Schlukebir, of Kalamazoo; nieces and nephews. Following a private family committal service, a memorial service will be conducted at 11:30 AM in the Fourth Reformed Church, 6339 Atlantic Ave. with Rev. Jack Doorlag, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday beginning at 10 AM until service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Fourth Reformed Church, Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan or Pretty Lake Vacation Camp.
