Daphne was born February 22, 1928 in the British Colony of Kharagpur, India to Harold and Beryl Meade. Daphne graduated with honors from Dowhill, a private boarding school in Kurseong, India, located in the Himalayan Mountains. She had a passion for the arts and her exceptional talent in canvas painting was recognized by Great Britain. In 1944 in Darjeeling, India, Domenick Schirripa, a drummer in the United States Army Band, sounded an immediate drum roll as Daphne walked into the dance hall with her parents. He knew right then she would be his forever. They wed on April 11, 1946 in Kharagpur, India, moved to West Virginia in June of 1946 and Kalamazoo became their home in December of 1950, where they have been dancing together ever since. Daphne was compassionate and selfless, with an amazing sense of humor and adventure, though love and devotion for her family always came first, she sin! cerely touched the hearts and lives of all that were fortunate enough to meet her. Daphne was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Russ Meade. Surviving are her husband, Domenick Schirripa; children, Fran (Bob) Carey of Kalkaska, MI, Denny (Angie) Schirripa of Kalamazoo and Barbara Kay (Gary) Murphy of WV; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and a sister, Barbara Greenwood in Virginia; and many nieces and nephews. Special thanks from the family goes out to the Westnedge Meijer pharmacists, Airway Oxygen and Borgess Hospice Nurses. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10:30 AM in the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. with Msgr. Michael Hazard officiating. Interment will follow in Ft. Of Port Huron Formerly of Kalamazoo Glenn A. Holmes, died August 22, 2010 in Port Huron, MI. He was born July 8, 1954 in Chicago, IL, the son of Robert and Lilly (Käär) Holmes. He was raised in the Kalamazoo area and had a strong love of the out of doors, particularly when it offered snow or water. Glenn was a lifelong skier, instructor, and coach, and could talk endlessly about different types of snow! He thoroughly enjoyed crewing in sailing races on both Lake Michigan, Gull Lake and Lake Huron eagerly awaiting the next event. He avidly followed The Chicago to Mackinac sailing race annually. Most people will remember Glenn for his humor, verbal wit, and helpfulness. While Glenn had lifelong struggles, those who knew him will recall him as someone who always genuinely cared about friends and never passed up an opportunity to spend time with them. Glenn was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his sister, Claire (Kris) Eager. He was born December 14, 1919 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late Jacob and Maria (De Vries) Meeuwse. A lifelong resident of Parchment and Kalamazoo, he was married for 54 years to Frances Ruth De Young, who preceded him in death on September 22, 1995. On March 8, 1997, he was married to Betty DeHaan, who survives him and lives in Chicago, IL. He was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army during WW II. He retired from James River Corporation (formerly Sutherland Paper and the Brown Company) after working as a pressman for 42 years and from Adventure Travel, after working as a courier for 10 years. He served God faithfully as a volunteer for many ministries of the Christian Reformed Church, and was a member, teacher and elder of the Second Christian Reformed Church. He was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is preceded in death by three brothers, Engbert, Jacob and Frank. Survivi! ng are a sister, Nell Pohlers of Gobles and a brother, Tony (Merrilie) Meeuwse of Kalamazoo; sisters-in-law, Margaret Ann Muse and Helen Meeuwse of Kalamazoo; sons, Henry (Kristi) of Charleston, SC and Jim (Cathy) of Kalamazoo; step-son, David (JoAnn) DeHaan of Tinley Park, IL; a friend he considered as a daughter, Marsha Meeuwse-Hutson (Ron) of Owosso; grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, Matthew, Kelly, Holly, Eric, Megan, David, Mark, Daniel and Steven; several great-grandchildren. Chess, age 60, passed away peacefully August 21, 2010. Nancy battled Lymphoma for more than a year at Bronson Hospital and the West Michigan Cancer Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan and at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She was born on October 31, 1949 in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and graduated from Biglerville High School in 1967 where she was known as an enthusiastic Canner cheerleader. Following graduation from Bryn Mawr Hospital School of Nursing in 1970, Nancy went to work at Hahnemann Medical Center in Philadelphia. After moving to Michigan in 1975, she married Joseph Chess, worked at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit and completed her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing. Joe and Nancy moved to Kalamazoo in 1991, where Nancy held a variety of positions in her role as a nurse and went to graduate school at Western Michigan University for a Masters degree in Public Administration. She became a certified personal trainer...Aside from her love of family, friends and co! mmunity, she also loved the outdoors, travel, entertaining, decorating, food and wine, tennis, dancing, kayaking and horseback riding. Nancy found fulfillment in community service and enjoyed volunteering for school activities, the Portage Educational Foundation Board, Heritage Community Board, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Kalamazoo. She enjoyed the occasional cosmopolitan and margarita with friends. Nancy always had a garden and loved brandishing a chainsaw and clippers around her yard. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Raymond Hale and Mary Margaret Robinson Hale. She is survived by sisters Ann (Fred) Hartzel, and Susan (Brooks) Lockley, and by brother, Bill (Diane). She is survived by Joe, her husband and love of her life for 37 years; children, Benjamin and Laura; and many loving nieces and nephews. She was born December 22, 1929 in Burlington Township, Michigan the daughter of Harry and Vera (Merrifield) McCracken. Marilyn attended school in Battle Creek and on July 14, 1956 was married to Allan Chapman. She was a homemaker and spent most of her married life in the Kalamazoo area. Marilyn loved to sing and was a member of the Kalamazoo Sweet Adeline's for many years as well as the Battle Creek Sweet Adeline's. She also volunteered at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo for many years. Marilyn enjoyed sewing and knitting, and spent many happy days camping and doing various activities with her son's Boy Scout troop. Surviving is her husband, Allan Chapman of Battle Creek; son, Frederick (Joan Youngdale) Chapman; and two grandsons, Caleb and Silas Chapman all of Marshall; sister, Myrna (Don) Keagle of Battle Creek; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Maurice and Harold McCracken; and one sister, Bonnie Hahn. The family! will receive friends at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home, 703 Capital Avenue, S.W., Battle Creek on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor Kelly Hadlich officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. William Of Kalamazoo "Bill", to his family and friends, was born in Waterloo, Iowa on December 10, 1935, the only child of Fred W. and Olive B. Button. He attended Waterloo Public School, East Waterloo High School, Drake University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa, achieving the degrees of Bachelor of Science, Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration. Bill's career included the practice of law with TWA in New York City, Kansas City Southern in Kansas City, and Great Lakes Gas Transmission Company and Darin Armstrong in Detroit. At various times in his career he taught junior high, high school, and undergraduate and graduate university. Bill shared his home in Kalamazoo with his four cats, Roxanne, Diva, Sinbad and Cyrano. Hobbies included travel, camping, reading (in excess of 50 books per year) and MUSIC! His love of music began as a child with piano, and then violin. These gave way to the trombone which was later joined by its low brass cousins, the euphon! ium, and tuba. He also played the acoustic bass guitar. After retiring in 2000, Bill became very involved with various musical groups, playing with the following: New Horizon, Ransom Street Big Band, Kalamazoo Concert Band, Kalamazoo Valley CC Campus Band, Kalamazoo College Symphonic Band, Jubal Brass Christian Brass Ensemble, Kalamazoo Mandolin/Guitar Orchestra and the Portage Senior Center Band. Bill is survived by cousins, Betty Miller, Harry Button, Ruth Grau, David Button, Stephen Button, Lucy Fanning, Nancy DiVincenzo, Robert Vierck and Dick Baldwin. His numerous friends over the many years include his lifelong friend, Roger (Caroline) Kalkis, as well as many friends in the various musical groups. Bill was a very kind and decent man. His friends will greatly miss him. A "Celebration of Bill's Life" will be hosted by Bill's church, Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 2208 Winchell Avenue on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 2:00 PM. Preceding the service will be a time o! f fellowship, and a light meal following the service. Of Kalamazoo Florence passed away early Tuesday morning, August 17, 2010 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was born January 20, 1927 in New York City, the daughter of the late Milton and Hattie (Jandorf) Myres. In 1949, Florence married A. Bruce Clarke, who later served as Chair of the Math Department, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and Provost at Western Michigan University. He preceded her in death in 1999. Florence graduated from Hunter College and received a Master's Degree in Mathematics from Brown University. She taught mathematics and statistics at Eastern Michigan University, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Nazareth College, Kalamazoo College, and Western Michigan University. In addition to her professional obligations, Florence traveled extensively. An excellent cook and avid bridge player, she also loved crossword puzzles and baseball. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Dr. David and Dr. Diane Clarke of Franklin, MI, Dr. Richard and Barbara Clarke of Rock! ville, MD, and Dr. Deborah Clarke and Phillip Bolda of Tempe, AZ; and five grandchildren, Chandra and Sam Davenport, Colin Clarke and Yifan Zhang, Kaila Clarke, Eric Clarke, and Jeffrey Clarke. Memorial services for Florence will be at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 28 at The Fountains at Bronson Place, 1700 Bronson Way.
