Age 81 Of Portage After three weeks of being diagnosed with brain cancer, Gisela passed away peacefully on September 2, 2010 at Rose Arbor Hospice. Gisela was born on October 16, 1928 in Breslau Germany the daughter of Richard and Margarete (Scheel) Nowarra. Gisela enjoyed nature, long walks, dancing and traveling. She worked at Macy's for 20 years in the accessory department before retiring in 2007. She was a former member of the German American Club. Gisela was preceded in death by her parents and former husband, Edwin Hinkley, Sr. She is survived by a daughter, Darlene "Dee" Chriscoe; a son, Ed (Linda) Hinkley, Jr.; four granddaughters, Michelle Nuyen, Nicole (Mike) Galiger; Michelle (Brent) Hostutler and Kelly (Chris) Hanna; nine great grandchildren; and a brother, Norbert Nowarra of Oberursel Germany. Family and friends will be received on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 from 11:00 AM until 12:00 Noon at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1747 Milham Ave. in Portage where Funeral Services will ! immediately follow at 12:00 Noon. Of Vicksburg Gertrude was born May 2, 1920, in Kalamazoo, the daughter of George and Agnes (LaCoss) Wellington and went home to be with her Lord on September 2, 2010. She was a lifelong area resident and had been office manager of the family business, Jaquays Electric Service for many years. She was a member of Faith Reformed Church for over 50 years, where she had served as librarian, Sunday school superintendent, in the choir and with the Friendly Visitors Group. Gertrude was past president of RCW Synod of the Great Lakes, past president of RCW Southwest MI Classical Union and member of the RCW Executive Council Synod of Michigan. She was currently a member of Lakeland Reformed Church. On August 5, 1939, she was united in marriage to Melbourne O. Jaquays, who survives. They were deeply in love for over 71 years. Also surviving are their three children, Gloria (Duane) Bodfish of Watervliet, Robert (Darlene) Jaquays of Vicksburg and Richard (Carol) Jaquays of Portage; 12 grandchildren; 2! 6 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Evelyn Dailey, Edna Chapman; several nieces and nephews. Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Wellington and step-sister, Murna Dussia. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 7 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Funeral Services will be held 11:00 AM Wednesday at Lakeland Reformed Church (10442 Sprinkle Rd.) with Rev. Ed Schmidt officiating. Of Kalamazoo Passed away Friday evening, September 3, 2010 at Kairos Dwelling. He was born September 2, 1920 in Colbert County, AL, a son of J.K and Odie (Gibson) Harrison and had been a resident of the Kalamazoo area for 52 years. Curtis served as a medical corpsman in the United States Army during WW II, and worked for the Parchment School District for 23 years as a custodial supervisor. He enjoyed being outdoors, his garden and animals, reading, and family was always his priority. On August 2, 1946, he married Delma Garner, who preceded him in death on May 29, 1999. He was also preceded by his parents; a brother Warren Harrison; and a sister, Frances Roberson. Curtis is survived by his daughters, Jan (Don) Norton of Comstock and Deb (Rick) Everett of Oshtemo; two grandsons, Chip (Kristin) Everett of Oshtemo and Stephen Everett of San Diego, CA; a brother, Lonnie (Mary) Harrison of Paw Paw; a sister, Bettye (Hershel) Tanksley of Augusta; nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be h! eld at 2:00 PM on Wednesday at Maple Grove Cemetery, Comstock Township.     2. I discovered a name of a person in a cemetery in Kalamazoo County, Daniel Davis, that reports he is a War of 1812 vet. I checked with Footnotes and there are 2 entries for a man with that name (don't know if same one): A list of Prisoners released. I would like to know more about the Kalamazoo man. Where in Kalamazoo County would you suggest I visit, to learn about this person and/or War of 1812 Vets in Kalamazoo County area? Thank you for your suggestions. Susanne

She was born May 18, 1919 in Kalamazoo, MI a daughter of John and Gertrude (Oosterhouse) Hoppe. Anne and her husband, Robert lived in Kalamazoo and Okemos in Michigan and King of Prussia in Pennsylvania. She was a talented musician and taught piano lessons at her home for many years. Anne also served as the organist and choir director at Fourth Reformed Church, North Park Reformed Church and Bridgeport Presbyterian Church. Anne retired from the East Lansing Public Schools after serving there as a librarian. In her free time, Anne enjoyed playing cards with her friends and working on needlepoint projects. Anne especially loved spending time with her grandchildren at their vacation home on Lake Leelanau. On August 22, 1947, Anne was united in marriage with Robert Vermeulen, who survives. Also surviving are: two children, Nancy Anne (Daniel) Craig of Pheonix, AZ and Robert Eric (Beth) Vermeulen of DeWitt, MI; four grandchildren, John Lutchko, Daniel Lutchko, Christian Dane Vermeulen and Darby Vermeulen; one great-granddaughter, Lilianne L! utchko; a brother, John (Lois) Hoppe; and nieces and nephews. Private burial services will be held Tuesday morning in Fort Custer National Cemetery. A memorial service will be held 2:00 Tuesday afternoon at Second Reformed Church, 2323 Stadium Drive, with the Rev. Mr. Kevin V. Hart, officiating. Al was a kind and loving man who enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He was a hard worker who retired from General Motors after more than twenty-five years of service. He then went to work as a school bus driver in Kalamazoo. When not working, he enjoyed camping, and was fond of model railroading. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 37 years, Joyce Walker. He is also survived by his children, Allen (Valarie) Walker Jr., Jean (Scott) Schingledecker, Karrieann Hallam, Kyle (Gurpreet) Walker, Richard Bradshaw, Sonya (Doug) Jones, Robin Ryno, Linda (David) Miles, Michael (Sue) Waters, and Jerry (Harleen) Waters; many grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and good friends. Passed away on August 30, 2010. Born May 8, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan. Raised in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Survived by wife, Betty Neal Bloom; son, Michael and wife, Lynn, of Plano, Texas, son, Roger and wife, Beverly of Garland, Texas; and granddaughters, Joanne and Elizabeth, both of Van Nuys, California. Bob attended Western Michigan University, graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Electrical Engineering. He also attended the Brookings Institute Management Training Program, UCLA Engineering Senior Management Training Program and graduated from the National War College in the Class of 1968. Bob joined the Army Signal Corps in 1942, attended Electronics school at Illinois Tech and was then assigned to the Office of Strategic Services. He served in North Africa and Italy during WWII and after discharge, completed his university studies, married Betty Neal in June 1947 and accepted a position with the Central Intelligence Agency in 1948. He retired from the CIA i! n 1973 as a member of the senior executive staff. During his tenure at the CIA, he served overseas in England, the Middle East, and Germany with his family and in several other locations for shorter periods. After retirement, he accepted employment with Telcom, Inc., where he served as Vice President, Engineering, Executive Vice President, and President when he retired in 1981. Bob and Betty found Lago Vista for their retirement where he was active in the Lakeline Christian Fellowship, city committees and the Lago Vista Country Club. Doug was born in Kalamazoo, on February 5, 1958, the son of the late Paul and Cleo (Scheiner) Deaner. He was a loving and devoted family man. He had a passion for the outdoors and when not working could be found hunting, fishing, or enjoying a quiet stroll through the woods. He loved animals, especially his faithful retriever, Lacey. Doug was a hard worker, who served as a department manager for K-Mart for over 25 years. On March 26, 1982, he married the love of his life, his wife Cindy (Slayton) who survives. Doug was a loving son, husband, father, brother and friend who will be dearly missed. He also leaves to cherish his memory, a son, Justin; a brother, Kurt (Nancy) Deaner; a sister, Nancy (Ken) Brightwell; mother and father in-law, Gil (Gloria) Slayton; a sister-in-law, Lisa Melville; brother-in-law, Troy (Jennifer) Slayton; many nieces, nephews and great friends. She was born on April 3, 1922, to William and Winifred Young in Muskegon, Michigan. She spent her childhood in Muskegon and Kalamazoo, Michigan. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1941. Following high school, she was employed as an office clerk at Checker Cab Manufacturing Company. As a young lady, Betty volunteered at the local USO club, where she enjoyed playing the piano and entertaining. Victor Gerald Mabus was a young soldier, stationed at Fort Custer near Battle Creek, when they met at the club. They were married on June 1, 1945 in Kalamazoo. Betty was raised, married and was active in The Methodist Church. For over twenty years, Betty managed Compere Fabrics in Portage, Michigan. She was involved in Girl Scouts, the Portage 4-H Organization and recently, The Ladies Auxiliary of VFW. Betty was an active homemaker. She loved to knit and sew many beautiful pieces fo! r her family and friends. "Busy hands/happy hands" describes her devotion to handicraft projects. Betty and Vic moved to Poncha Springs, Colorado, in 1997, to be closer to their sons and daughter, and to retire in the mountains, which she loved. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Gordon Young, of Brethren, Michigan. Betty is survived by her husband, Victor; brothers, William Young and Jack Young of Kalamazoo, daughter Cheryl (Joe) Tischer, Salida, sons Victor (Jayne) Mabus, Salida, Jan (Jerrie Dance) Mabus, Lakewood; seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, and many dear friends at Columbine Care Center in Salida. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 16, at 11:00 AM at the Salida Steam Plant Annex, Salida. Audrey was born May 26, 1927 in Kalamazoo, MI and was a lifetime area resident. She was the daughter of Andrew P. and Helen L. (Bahr) Olsen. Audrey was a 1945 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and attended Western Michigan University for two years. She and her husband, Flateau traveled the world quite extentisively and after his death, family cruise's were a mainstay. Audrey enjoyed playing a round of golf anytime with friends at Gull Lake Country Club, of which she was a member. She was an avid Bridge player, who did not like to lose. Audrey was truly a wonderful lady, mother, grandmother and special friend, who will be greatly missed by all! On July 26, 1947, in Kalamazoo, Audrey was united in marriage to Flateau Allen, who preceded her in death on February 9, 1998. Surviving are her two daughters, Leanne J. (Ralph) Holroyd o! f Charleston, SC and Louise J. Ludwig of Hickory Corners, MI; by her son, Scott F. (Holly) Allen of Gull Lake; five grandchildren, Aaron (Irene) Allen, Rachel Allen, Daniel (Nicole) Holroyd, Nicholas (Caitlin) Holroyd and Laci Ludwig; a great grandchild, Logan Holroyd and by her brother, Chuck (Dora) Olsen of Oshtemo, MI. Audrey was preceded in death by her parents. At the request of Audrey's family, friends will be received by the family on Thursday, September 2nd from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Richland Chapel, 9170 East D Avenue, Richland.
