(Dick) Vicksburg Richard G. Griner passed away peacefully on Friday, September 10, following a brief stay at Rose Arbor. Dick was born on August 23, 1925, in Schoolcraft, Michigan, and resided in Vicksburg most of his life. Dick was a proud veteran of World War II, 67th Armored Regiment Recon Company, having served in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Berlin Invasion. He received the Eame Theater Ribbon with 5 Bronze Stars, the good Conduct Ribbon, Belgium Fouragere Award, and the WW II Victory Medal. Dick retired from the Upjohn Company in 1985 after 32 years of employment. He was well known as a handyman and spent many of his retirement years doing carpentry work for friends and family. He served many years as a Vicksburg Volunteer Fireman, and also served on the Fireman's Volunteer Diving Team. Dick was a member of VFW Post 5855, the American Legion, the American Legion Drum and Bugle Core and for many years sang and danced in the Vicksburg Rotary Showboat. Dick's family was very! special to him, and he especially loved and enjoyed time with his granddaughter Amy. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean (Miller) Griner; his daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Don Hippen; his granddaughter, Amy (Hippen) Saunders and Grant Saunders, whose help and friendship he so appreciated. He is also survived by his brother, James (Leona) Griner of California; cousins, Joyce Pancake and Phyllis Bertch; as well as numerous sisters-in law and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his brother Kenneth Griner, brother-in-law Robert Nimmo, and cousin Barbara Bowers. Per Dick's wishes cremation has taken place. There will be a graveside service at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 14, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Southwest Michigan. The couple enjoyed 45 years of happy marriage. Ken worked at Clark Equipment for 28 years, before his retirement in 1983. He then worked as a security guard for Pinkerton Security. My grandmother's name was Katherine (also Kathryn) Mary Beezer Lane. I can trace the Beezer line back to the 1600's but her husband - John Robert Lane - the only information I have is his name, a birthdate of Aug. 17, 1894 Michigan, a marriage date of Aug. 11, 1928 and DOD Oct. 7, 1942. Prior to his marriage in 1928... who knows? Much speculation..no photographs.. stories that he ran away from home. Father may have worked in mines. Without his parents names and with such a common Surname it has been difficult. I'm new to this...so I appreciate the support and I'm sorry if I'm going about things in the wrong way. Thank You. Age 85 Of Portage On Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 at 1:30 AM, loving husband and father passed comfortably into the next phase of Life's journey. Born Howard Leroy Case on April 27th, 1925 in Walker, MN and at the age of 6 weeks moved with his family to Kingsford, MI where he grew up. In childhood Howard lost his brother, Lyle and sister, Laura. After his tour of service in the US Navy during WWII, Howard returned to Kingsford and he would "hang out" at the local Ice Cream Parlor, the "Bon Ton Café" where, fortunately for us all, he met our mother, Mary Ann Mottes. The two of them married on March 1st, 1947. Over the next 63 years these two would see; the birth of five children, Howard would do another tour of service in Korea, the passing of their two oldest children, Lawrence Earl Case and Lynn Marie Case-Schultz, the passing of his brother, Vern, and his sister, Helen (Case) De Vore, and the recent passing of his sister-in-law, Lynae (Froberg) Case. Howard and Mary Ann would grow togethe! r from U.P. life in the 50's and 60's to a 20 year career that impacted the lives of working people throughout SW Michigan in his role as a State Labor Mediator. Upon his retirement the Kalamazoo Gazette devoted a whole page to him with the headline "Mr. Integrity Calls it Quits". Howard Leroy Case passed into the next phase with his Pride and Integrity in tact! We will miss you until we meet again and love you forever. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Gardner, shortly after moving to Omaha, NE in 1972. Carolyn continued to enjoy quilting and remodeling homes after retiring from Pamida in Omaha, NE. She then returned to her hometown of Warner, SD before moving to Richland, MI to receive special care from her daughter. Grateful for having shared Carolyn's life are her daughters, Karen Lee Brower, Sioux Falls, SD and Jamie Gardner Rehfeld, Richland, MI; son, Arthur James Gardner, North Platte, NE; sisters, Beverly Christensen, Luverne, MN, Ramona Keller, Pembina, ND; eight grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
