Jane started life as the third child of Leo and Pauline (Searles) Gibbons, Detroit, MI on May 10th, 1921. Earning a Masters Degree in Home Economics from Wayne State University, Jane served as head of that Department in the late 1940's. In 1947 she married Merle E Webb, her husband of 56 years, who preceded her in death March 17, 2003. Their three children survive: Melissa Webb Muha, Portage, MI; Michael (Pamela) Webb, Richmond, VA; and Brian (Carmella) Webb, Columbus, OH. Also surviving are seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces Helen Jane and Marcia; nephews Steve and Randy. Preceding her in death were her parents and brothers Robert and Richard Gibbons. Jane & Merle moved to Kalamazoo in the early 1950's. After several years as a full-time mother and homemaker, Jane returned to education as a Science and Math teacher at Northeastern Junior High School and later as a tutor for the SLD ! Learning Center. She was a co-founder and director of Kalamazoo's Major Disease Clinic, a non-profit clinic serving the needs of children with serious medical conditions. Jane was a devoted wife, a creative homemaker, a gifted teacher, a loving mother and an active member of First United Methodist Church. Family will receive friends from 10:00 AM to Noon Monday January 28th at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St. with a memorial service at noon the same day. A reception for family and friends will be held immediately following the memorial service in the KIVA at Friendship Village. Dorothy was born on March 12, 1935 in Grand Rapids, MI and is the daughter of John and Eda B. (Teunis) VanderZouwen. She was a 1952 graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Dorothy resided in Grand Rapids from her birth until 1964; then, they moved to Kalamazoo, MI until 1972; then to Richland, MI until 1984; then to Elkhart, IN until 2000 and finally, to Scotts, MI. She enjoyed gardening and bird watching, but her family was her pride and joy. On August 7, 1953 in Grand Rapids, MI, Dorothy was united in marriage to Marvin J. VanDyke, Sr. and he survives. Also surviving are her four sons: Marvin J. (Charlotte) VanDyke, Jr. of Kalamazoo, MI, Randall S. (Cheryl) VanDyke of Scotts, Bruce A. (Deb) VanDyke of Elkhart, IN and Jeffrey L. (Karen) VanDyke of Hickory Corners, MI; her son-in-law: Duane (Josie) Andrus of Kalamazoo; ! twenty two grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; her parents: John and Eda VanderZouwen of Grand Rapids; two brothers: Bryan "Bernie" (Joyce) VanderZouwen of Grand Rapids and Jack (Barbara) VanderZouwen of Traverse City, MI and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter: Cheri J. Andrus on Nov. 25, 1994. At the request of the family, friends may call on Monday, January 28th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Northeastern Baptist Church, East Entrance, 6536 East G Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI, 49048 and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday at the Church. The funeral service to celebrate Dorothy's life will be held on Tuesday, January 29th at 11:00 AM at the Northeastern Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. John Blodgett of Elkhart, IN, and Rev. Gregory L. Bishop and Rev. Nathan Pierpont, both of Northeastern Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Prairie Home Cemetery, Richland, MI. He was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo, living primarily in the Vine neighborhood where he had many friends including several special friends at the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and received the Korean Service Ribbon with one Bronze Star, the National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna. Military honors will be conducted under the auspices of the Ft. Custer Honor Guard and the U.S. Army at Ft. Custer National Cemetery on Wednesday January 30, 2008 at 12 noon. Those wishing to attend the service should gather in the funeral cortege assembly area at 11:45 AM on Wednesday. She was born July 14, 1923, in Traverse city, Michigan to the late Frank Edwin and Georgiaetta Ashton. The beautiful Ashton Park was a gift of her family to the residents of Traverse City many years ago. She attended the University of Michigan where she obtained her Masters Degree in Nursing. During her long career as a Registered Nurse she became the head of Nursing at Munson Hospital (now Munson Medical Center) in Traverse City. Eventually she moved to Kalamazoo where she was employed for many years at the Upjohn Company as an industrial nurse. In 1981, she was united in marriage to the late John D. Littig M.D. She was an excellent cook who loved to entertain friends and family. She was an assistant at The Kalamazoo Kennel Club and involved in many philanthropic activities throughout her life. She will be dearly missed by her fami! ly and all who knew her. Joanne is survived by her stepson Lawrence Littig of South Salem, New York, her step-grandchildren Lawrence W. Littig Jr. (Kipp) and wife Jill along with great-grandchildren Emma, Lauren and Trescher of Fairfield, CT, John S. Littig and Lynn of Brooklyn, New York, Lisa Ann Tucker and husband Adam of New York City, she is further survived by her cousin Jean Meyers of Muskegon, Michigan, nieces Sandra Taylor and husband Glenn of Ft. Worth, Texas, Carol Lidstrom and husband Craig of Farmington Hills, Michigan, nephew John E. Ashton Jr. of Scottsdale, Arizona, ten great-nephews and nieces and 17 great-great grand nephews and nieces along with many dear friends. The daughter of Manford and Nonie (Toole) Byers, she was born April 8, 1925 in Gentryville, Indiana. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident for 61 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and three brothers, by her husband George in 1993, and by her son Gary in 1980. Marjorie was a longtime member of the Oakwood Bible Church in Kalamazoo where she taught Sunday School for many years and later visited the elderly and the homebound. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Karen Brown (Winter Haven, FL) and Nona (Michael) Fitzhugh (Comstock Park, MI), three grandchildren (Joy Fleeger, Josh Fitzhugh, Brent Greenberg), four great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives. On Tuesday, January 29 family and friends may meet the family for visitation at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes' Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick, in Kalamaz! oo, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Ken was born December 26, 1925 in Centerville, MI the son of Floyd F. and Ethel I. (Kline) Cole. He resided in Comstock for many years in the home he built for his family. He was a member of the Comstock United Methodist Church, played the organ, loved carpentry, gardening, golf, and most of all his family. During WW II he served his country in the United States Navy and was employed by James River Corp. as a production planner for 40 years. On June 23, 1950 he married the former Virginia Hills, who preceded him in death on June 14, 2004. He was also preceded by his brothers, Donald Cole and Eugene Cole; and a sister, Juanita Subacz. Ken is survived by his children, Kenneth G. Portage, MI Went to be with the Lord Thursday afternoon January 24, 2008 at her residence. Mary was born June 21, 1921 in Comstock, Michigan, the daughter of Floyd and Ruth (Baughman) Harbeson. She had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed with Sabos Food Service for 18 years at GMC before retiring. Mary enjoyed knitting, her little dog Dutchess and watching the evening boats come in on Austin Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her former husband. On June 27, 1953, she was united in marriage to Alfred S. Boelman who survives. Also surviving, is her son Michael Cohen of Hilliard, OH; a brother, Thomas Harbeson of Portage; brothers-in-law, Jerry Boelman of Parchment and Steve (Shirley) Boelman of Kalamazoo; sisters-in-law, Edna Dolhay of Kalamazoo and Ann Vermeulen of Kalamazoo, and very special friends whom she loved dearly, Kriss (Carl) Swinehart of Manton, MI; Jason Swinehart of Kalamazoo; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Services will be h! eld 10:30 Tuesday from the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the chapel. She enjoyed friends, family, flowers, sports, music, camping and travel. A skilled seamstress, she liked to design her own creations. For many years she worked tirelessly on behalf of the developmentally disabled, even forming a Girl Scout Troop for them. She was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Community church of Southwest Michigan. On June 1, 1938 she was united in marriage to Herbert A. TOMPKINS, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Ted N. TOMPKINS of Schoolcraft; two daughters, Patricia A. CARLSON of Sparta and Margaret "Peggy" TOMPKINS of Kalamazoo; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. RAGAN died in his home Saturday at the age of 69. RAGAN retired as deputy chief in 1975 after 25 years on the police force. Before that he worked for the Dowagiac Police Department and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. He also was a state police officer for the Michigan State Police at its Battle Creek post. While with the Kalamazoo Police department, RAGAN advanced rapidly through the ranks from a patrol officer to 1950 to the rank of deputy chief in 1970. His son, David RAGAN of Allegan, said his father enjoyed his work as a police officer, particularly his years on the street. "He never cared for it as much as an administrator as he did on the street," he said. "He liked to be a street copy." David RAGAN said his father liked to play golf when he was not working and enjoyed yard work and small construction projects. Besides his son, RAGAN is survived by Francis RAGAN, his wife of 42 years; f! ive grandsons; a brother, Merle RAGAN of Heber Springs, Ark; and two sisters Vera HARRIS of Marcellus and Myrtle PAUL of Eau Claire.
